According to an interview with Tom Goodyear conducted by Anna Elton Morris in 1985 Dr. Carey met his future wife on a hunting trip in Newfoundland. He also related the story that as an 8 month old infant she was shipwrecked off Mistaken Point on the S. S. Hanoverian when she had been taken to visit her grandparents and that Alexander Graham Bell was on the ship at the time of the sinking.
