8. Customs and Immigration: Failed to pay duty on a load of salt destined for US, 17 Jun 1834, Calvert, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 118 Tuesday, 17 June 1834 "George schooner Capt. Cody from St. John's for New York put in here with salt for Devereaux yesterday. Had no clearance for it. Allowed the vessel to discharge, no fraud being intended and presuming, liberty was given." Here we have a situation where it proved useful for Michael Devereaux to have a good working relationship with the local JP responsible for Customs clearances. This load of salt, a very important and expensive commodity in the salt fish business, had undoubtedly been routed from Europe to the US via St. John's without Customs duties being paid in Newfoundland, since that was not the intended destination of the cargo. But by taking a load of salt off of her, Michael Devereaux managed to save a great deal of money in Customs charges. Robert Carter suggests there was no intent on the part of the Captain or Devereaux to defraud the Newfoundland government and deprive the colony of this revenue, but one wonders.

11. Court: Indentures to James McBride et al, St. John's, 23 May 1835 to 23 Nov 1835, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 121 There are two indentures to the same creditors, the first binding his fishing room and premises which is rented to him by James H. Carter on behalf of the owner Roberts, and the second binding his ships and fishing gear. The amounts are £100 - 10 and £250 - 10 respectively
12. Property: Deed at the Confederation Bldg, Vol 1, page 441, 23 May 1835, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 119 Sold land to James McBride
13. Appointment: Member of Board of Commission for Roads and Bridges from Ferryland and Quarry River, 20 Feb 1838, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 122 And also for Quarry River to Aquaforte
14. Election: On Voters List in Ferryland North, 1840-1859, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 123 1840 - 1859 Voter's Lists Ferryland District
15. Property: Grant No. 659 to Michael, James and John Devereaux, 27 Dec 1847, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 124 This grant is most likely to the three young sons of the original Michael, not to the father. But there is no way of proving this; it only makes sense since there were three of them going in on it that they would be brothers.
This event was shared with James DEVEREAUX, John DEVEREAUX, and Michael DEVEREAUX.
Michael married someone before 1822 in Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.111
