1. Arrival: Just returned from voyage to China, 1 Aug 1834, Calvert, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 1870 Friday, 1 August 1834
"William Morry, son of Matthew Morry, Jr., returned a day or so since from a voyage to China during which, he says he was not out of the ship from his leaving London to his return to it again. What a want of curiosity, he lay three days at St. Helena and could have gone on shore if he chose." This William was William Sweetland Morry who later became a sea captain in his own right sailing the seven seas. At this time he was approaching his 20th birthday in September and would more likely have been a Mate on the vessel in question, though it is possible he was a Master even then. The purpose of such a voyage is unknown but it would have had nothing to do with the Newfoundland codfish trade.
