In re
Peter Rogerson deceased.

In the name of God Amen, I Peter Rogerson of St. John's Newfoundland, Merchant, being of sound health mind & memory and knowing the uncertainty of human life do make this as my last will and testament, that is to say, after all my just debts are paid, I leave and bequeath to my beloved wife Amelia Rogerson all my property of goods & chattels whatsoever, book debts &c. for her use and behoof during her natural life and at her death to go to my son James J. Rogerson & his children after her death as she may direct & to be given in such a way as they may not sell nor dispose of the same but receive the rents of all the landed property for their support.

Given under my hand & seal as my last will & testament & appointing my said wife Amelia Rogerson, and James J. Rogerson my sole executors of this my last will & testament in presence of this 27th day of March 1850.

Codicil to the foregoing will & testament. I give to my wife Amelia Rogerson the rents of all my landed property during her lifetime and at her decease all my landed property goods chattels book debts &c. shall descend to my son James Johnston Rogerson for his lifetime, and at his death it shall become the property of his children, but to my grandson James Carlot Rogerson I give over and above his share of my other property the Stone building I at present occupy in Water Street near Queen Street to be his and his heirs for ever, dated at St. John's the second day of July 1856 in presence of -as witnesses thereto,

Note: The wills in those will books are NOT actual wills. They are either hand-written copies or in later years typed copies of a, "last will and testament," written or typed by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation and also no paragraphs. The originals were kept by the executor.

We who have typed these wills, have made every effort to include all the errors that were on the microfilm, in order to avoid destroying the integrity of the originals, where ever they may be. However, in some of the very long wills, we have tried to insert paragraphs to make it easier for the researcher to read the document.
