051218:

It is not absolutely clear that this burial record applies to this Mary Windsor/Winser. Apart from the difference in the spelling of the surname, which can be ignored, there is the difference in the stated age at burial - 74. If that were accurate she should have been born in 1768. But people were known to falsify their ages regularly and people may have been under the impression that she was indeed born 7 years later than she actually was. Or they may have had no idea when she actually was born, since it appears that she was a spinster and may have had no close relatives to corroborate this information who would have the correct date.

Information from the NGB website.

May 22 1843 St. Johns Hugh MONTGOMERY bach, St Johns Mary WINSOR spin, St Johns Sarah Medland, Matthew Winsor Mary WINSOR is believed to have been bapt 1825 Teignmouth, Devon, the dau of Matthew Winsor & Charlotte Taylor; she later remarried 1846 to Simon Lacey, of Exploits, Burnt Island NDB.

And also

Charlotte Ann MONTGOMERY Hugh & Mary WINSOR b Aug 20 1844 bap Sep 30 1844 St. Johns sailor Married 1843; she is believed to be the dau of Matthew WINSOR & Charlotte TAYLOR, baptized 1825 Teignmouth, Devon. Mary remarried to Simon Lacey of Burnt Island, Exploits 1846.

The above information pertaining to this marriage is from the Vital Records transcript but the inferences made in regard to Mary's parentage were made by the transcriber, Jill Marshall in 2003. Whilst she has accurately recorded what is found in the DPHW record, those records appear to be inaccurate and her inference is probably incorrect.

The DPHW record of this marriage as well as the birth/baptism of one child named Charlotte Ann (none others are found on the NGB website) both give the husband's name as Hugh.

But Gert Crosbie has noted that a marriage was recorded between a man named Isaac J. Montgomery "of the vessel Governor Harvey" [brig] and a Mary Louise Windsor [sic] in the Times and General Commercial Gazette on June 15th 1843:

Name:Isaac J. Montgomery
Gender:Male
Event Type:Marriage
Marriage Date:Abt 1843
Spouse :Mary Louise Windsor
Cleric 1 Name:Rev. T.F.H. Bridge
Reference Date 1:15 Jun 1843
Source:Times and General Commercial Gazette 1832-1895
Notes:Bride was the third daughter of Henry Windsor. Groom was "of the vessel Governor Harvey" (brig).

[above found on Ancestry.com]

It seems highly likely that this was the marriage in question. And the newspaper reported that the bride was the third daughter of Henry Windsor, not Matthew Winser, as Jill deduced.

I cannot account for the fact that both the marriage and the baptism records as transcribed in the DPHW referred to the husband/father as Hugh and not Isaac. Perhaps the newspaper was wrong. But nevertheless I think that this shows that Jill's conclusion as to the parentage of this Mary is incorrect.

The Mary to whom she refers may well have been married at a later date to Simon Lacey of Exploits, but this is not she, as far as I can tell.

Do you want to risk the ire of such a prolific and valued volunteer by challenging her notations?

One way or the other I am changing this relationship on my family tree today. I trust Gert more than the DPHW.

February 28, 2004: In email from Dave Taylor (Dad's second cousin): "My maternal grandmother was Emma Winsor Lester. I lived with her and two of her daughters from 6 months to about 3. I then spent many Summers at Mount Pearl. Emma was a sister to (I believe) your g grandmother."

[Editorial Note: Actually Clara Isabella Windsor, my G. Grandfather T. G. Morry III's second wife, but not my G. Grandmother]

"In going through some of the Ferryland records I noticed the headstone inscription for your g grandmother noting that she died at Uplands. What you may not be aware of is that Uplands was the name ofEmma Lester's farm at Mount Pearl, so it cannot be found on a map.

One other story of interest to you.

During the first world war, Howard Morry was in hospital, either in France or England I am not sure. He struck up a conversation with the soldier next to him, a Bradshaw from Br. Columbia. After some time they realized that they were related as Bradshaw said his mother was a Winsor from Aquaforte. You can imagine the fuss this created amongst all the soldiers. A soldier seven beds down the ward wanted to know what it was all about and was told the story. His reply to the effect, I am from South Africa and my name is Winsor. My father was from Aquaforte! The 3 first cousins who had never met before were brought together in hospital.

I am not sure how much truth and how much fiction there is to the story. Howard Morry had 1st cousins such as Bradshaw and Winsor who served in the war. Have you heard the story before?
