His declared his home had 12 rooms and was valued at $2000, much higher than his neighbours who were fishermen. But his income was $300, not much more than those involved in the fishery full time. Note that Dr. Joseph Louis Giovanneti is staying with them as a lodger. This event was shared from Pte. Gary also corrects his date of appointment to the Constabulary. It was Sept. 11, 1939, not Oct. 1938, as I had been told by Dad.

But I believe he also served for a while after the war before getting back into the fish business.

Note that the census taker made numerous mistakes. He had them all as of Irish extraction, including Mom Morry, even though he had her place of birth as Scotland! He had Dad Morry listed as "housewife" where his occupation should be instead of Mom Morry. But the information on him is found in the line above and shows him as a cod fisherman earning $600/yr. He also had her listed as an RC. Then on the next page he has Uncle Bill and Uncle Reg listed as being of English extraction even though they are in the same family as the others.

I copied this here because it reminded me of the lost history of the Morrys. Features like "Morry's Pond" and "Morry's Lane" are unheard of today. The latter was given the name Holdsworth's Lane when the Town of Ferryland put up street signs some years ago. As appropriate as that name is, this having been originally the lands of the Holdsworth enterprises, it does undermine and devalue the importance of the Morry family in Ferryland after the Holdsworth took their fortune and left.
