• Interesting: An accomplished musician of popular music; organised several bands, Between 1912 and 1950, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Started playing when young in England and continued in France to entertain the troops during WWI.

• Military: Served for the duration of the war, Between 28 Dec 1915 and 31 Mar 1920, London, Greater London, England. Promoted to l/Cpl, then Cpl, then SSM, then RSM, then A/WO 1.

• Military: Citations for Distinguished Conduct Medal in London Gazette, 1919-1920, London, Greater London, England. Email to Jean Carter Stirling, 050821:

Hi again Lady Jean:

You probably noticed already that there was nowhere on the medal card I sent you for special honours like the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Those are only found in the citation in the London Gazette.

In your father's case, the citation appeared four times according to my search: 5 June 1919, 30 May 1919, 9 March 1920 and 15 March 1920. This seemed odd to me because there was such a long separation between the insertions. But upon reading the four pages it was clear that there were two versions but all were about your father's award. And the dates of insertion were slightly different.

On June 3 1919 this is how the citation read:
761284 C./S./M. (A./R.S.M.) - E. Fox, 1/28th Bn., Lond. R. (Carn Brea, Cornwall).

On June 5 1919 this is how the citation read:
761284 C./S./M. (A./R.S.M.) E. Fox, l/28th Bn., Lond. R. (Carn Brea, Cornwall).

On March 11 1920 this is how the citation read:

761284 C./S./M. (A./R.S.M.) E. Fox, ]/28th Bn., Lond. R. (Carn Brea, Cornwall).
For conspicuous ability during the period 17th September to 11th November, 1918.
During the operations he has always set a splendid example to all those who came in .contact with him, and his powers of organisation have gone far to maintain a high standard of efficiency.

On March 15 1920 this is how the citation read:
761284 C./S./M. (A./R.S.M.) E. Fox, I/28th Bn., Lond. R. (Carn Brea, Cornwall).
For conspicuous ability during the period 17th September to 11th November, 1918.
During the operations he has always set a splendid example to all those who came in contact with him, and his powers of organisation have gone far to maintain a high standard of efficiency.

My guess is that they had to get final approval on the full explanation for making the award and, like all things military, that took some time.

The actual pages from the Gazette are attached so you can read some of the other citations.

Love

Chris

Dear Sir/Ms:
I am trying to find out more about my father's service during World War 1, and I will give you what little I know in the hopes that you might supply me with his discharge certificate and/or some further details, such as where the regiment was serving at various times, as I believe he was in uniform for the whole four years, much spent in the trenches. His home was in Illogan, Cornwall, and he emigrated to Newfoundland (then not part of Canada) around 1920, I believe. He died 1950 age 58, in Toronto, Ontario Canada.

His decoration was the Distinguished Conduct Medal -

Came from a mining family, and had at least two other siblings, an old er
brother Arthur for one, and a (later) married sister, who was living in Redruth
during World War II.

He went to work in St. Ives,Cornwall for the Pengelly's, perhaps at 17 years,
around 1908. At the time his family were living at CARN BRAE or nearby.
In 1912, at 21 or 22, he played with his Soccer team in Paignton (see picture.)

That same year, he arrived in Newfoundland, then returned to join up,1914. He
was a Warrant Officer in the Br. Army and spent four years in the trenches.
About 1919 he returned to Nfld, joined Confederation Life, married Nell Carter
and rented a house at 21 Queen's Road (no longer there). His father-in-law,
called Carty by some, and Charlie by the family, lived with them. He had a small
dance band which played at the Masonic. Until then, dancing had been done to
brass bands.

Around 1930-31, he bought 16 Rennie's Mill Road, became Manager for Nfld. of
Confederation Life and generally did well. He was best known for his piano
playing, for parties and singsongs; during WW 2 he did a lot of entertaining
for those in uniform.
