250815:
Although the 1891 Census shows him as being the son of John and Matilda Gray, he is 8 and she is 66 so this is impossible. More than likely he was the result of a birth out of marriage of their daughter Annie. She would have been about 13 at the time and more than likely it was a case of rape (incest?)
in 1891 he is at home but in 1901 the Census shows the other four still together but he is gone. He would be 18 at the time if still alive.

Edwin is not at home with his family for the 1861 census when he would have been 9. It turns out he was then a pupil at a boarding school called Special Prospect House Academy not that far away in Edmonton, Enfield, a Borough of London. His parents may have felt the surroundings more suitable for a young man than the public house where his father worked.

From Janet McIntyre, April 30, 2013
Hello Chris, My great grandfather was born in Newton Abbott Devon, England in about 1819, I know his fathers name was John as I have a marriage certificate for his marriage to Elizabeth Rook(widow)which at present I can't find. As far as know they only had one son Edwin and no other children. I have found a baptism for Edwin Gray 16th June 1820 at Wolborough Newton Abbott. father John Gray, who is listed as a cooper. Mother Mary Gray..
I have not been able to prove this as yet. Perhaps John had a brother . Trust this will help. Regards, Janet.
It now appears that George and Edwin were brothers and both sons of John the Cooper and his wife Mary.

Chris, Details of the three Edwins. Edwin Gray born in Newton Abbott died at the age of 78 in 1899, probably at the Station Hotel Welling Kent. His death is registered at Dartford in the first. quarter . His son Edwin born in Walthamstow died at age 52 in 1933 either at the local cottage hospital or at the Station Hotel his death is registered at Dartford . His son Edwin George Walford also born in Walthamstow, died at age 44 in 1952 on October 6th at the Station Hotel. I was present with my mother and grandmother. His death is registered at Sidcup. My mother was born at the Station Hotel in March 1919. I have a pre paid account with findmypast and I think it gives additional searches. If you want to know anything let me know . I know how charges can mount up. I can go to our local library and print things off. Until next time. Janet.

Edwin Gray16 June 1820 son of John and Mary Gray (cooper)
The other sources of information on his birth are the censuses but UK censuses only give age, not date of birth. I believe the data from St. Mary the Virgin is for christenings, not birth, and am correcting this today.

080513: In my vain efforts to assist Janet McIntyre to find a relationship between her grandfather, Edwin Gray, in Kent and the husband of Jane Josephine Morry, William Nichols Gray, in Newfoundland, I found this reference to William's father, George, on the Devon Family History Society website under "Strays"
GRAY George 1822 Newton Abbot Death 4 Feb 1893 NL CAN 71 Royal Gazette & Newfoundland Advertiser 7 Feb 1893 Information was for a number of years bookkeeper in employ of Mssrs P & E Tessier
The interesting thing is that this same information, more or less, was available on the Births, Marriages and Deaths CD of Gert Crosbie's newspaper transcriptions but they did not give his age at death, 71. This changes everything because I was formerly assuming his birth year to be around 1840 for some reason while this places him almost two decades earlier.
090513: This by email from Janet McIntyre today: Chris, I have found a George Gray baptised on July 2nd 1822 in Wolborough Newton Abbott Devon. He is the son of John and Mary Gray and he is a cooper, George looks as if he is Edwin's brother. This information came from the Devon Baptism transcriptions. What do you think? Janet.
I am pretty confident that this is our man. Once Janet locates the baptism record that she mislayed for Edwin the elder we will know if they were indeed brothers.
