190710:
The date of death on the stone is blurred and could be 1918 or 1916. I'm leaving it as 1916 for now pending other evidence.
210911: And here is the evidence:
City of St. John's death register for 1916:
June 16Brookfield Heart disease HAMLYN Beatrice Church of England 17 Church of England Cemetery
This also clears up another mystery. I had noted that in the 1921 Census it gave the children's place of birth as Brookfield. I felt that was wrong and that it meant Brookfield in Bonavista Bay. I now realise that it was correct. This was a part of St. John's around Topsail Rd.

She definitely died before 1921 because she is not shown on the census

160710:
He signed the marriage record with an X. He was already in St. John's in 1898 as a farmer, which shoots down the old family lore that he was brought over from England to do the gardening during the construction of Bowering Park, since that wasn't constructed until 1910.
190710: And now to blow the whole ridiculous story out of the water! Moses Samuel Hamlyn was NOT born in England. I just found his birth record on NGB:
HAMLYNMoses Samuel HAMLYN William & Anne b June 29 1864 Brookfield bap Sep 18 1864 not given
This was found in the register of births at St Mary's Anglican Church (South Side, St. John's). Brookfield was an area of St. John's along the Topsail Rd.
So much for another of the many false family legends in the Wheeler/Bishop family.
Here is the 1921 Census for St. John's West Boggy Hall area:
6265 HAMLYN Moses S. M Head Married 1864 June 57 Topsail Road 62 65 HAMLYN Theresa F Wife Married 1865 May 56 Green Harbour 62 65 HAMLYN Harry M Son Single 1902 Nov 19 Brook Field TB 62 65 HAMLYN Weston M Son Single 1903 July 18 Brook Field TB 62 65 HAMLYN George M Son Single 1905 April 16 Brook Field TB 62 65 HAMLYN Alexander M Son Single 1909 Aug 12 Brook Field TB 62 65 HAMLYN Victoria F Daughter Single 1906 May 15 Brook Field TB
Note that it shows all their children born in Brook Field TB but Moses born on Topsail Rd. In fact this is wrong because his birthplace is shown on his birth record as Brookfield and it is not in Trinity Bay, but rather a part of St. John's. I suspect the census taker got the facts mixed up and had the mother's birthplace (Trinity Bay) interposed with that of the children! I presume they got Theresa's birthplace more or less right (It's actually Greens Harbour, not Green Harbour, TB)! I suspect that since he was already resident as a farmer on Topsail Rd. in 1894-97 his children were all born in St. John's and I am making it so today.
240810:

010514: Name appears in the 1898 edition of McAlpine's Directory as a farmer on Topsail Rd. (seen on Ancestry.com)
Just saw a copy of the 1921 Census page sent to me by Don Tate of NGB. The letters were not TB but TR for Torbay Rd. and therefore a change will be made to the online transcription.
