Events

• Alt. Birth: 1862, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

• Alt. Birth: 1863, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

• Property: Re-acquired his 1/6th of 1/8th share of the George Hutchings estate from James Baird, 4 Apr 1884, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The Le Messurier share of the vast George Hutchings estate was 1/8th of the total by virtue of the marriage of George Hutchings' daughter Elizabeth Coke to Pierre Broom Le Messurier. This was then divided six ways amongst her surviving children, one of whom was George William LeMessurier's father, George Hare Le Messurier. George W. had assigned his 1/6th of 1/8th share to James Baird on Oct. 22, 1879 and was here reacquiring it.

A noted benefactor, indeed, [referring to Edgar Bowering, second husband of Flora Le Messurier] for which he was knighted by King George. He was also very generous toward his family and brought his stepson, John Munn into the Bowring firm as a Director, initially, rising to become Managing Director by the time he and Betty were lost in the Florizel disaster. I know much less about Flora, my cousin, who would have been lost in the shadows of her larger than life husband, other than she doted on her son John and his family. John had been a cricketer of some note in his short adult life but would not have had much time to put his stamp on the firm or society, otherwise. Because of this connection I am somewhat fascinated by the story of the Bowring's and Bowring Park, donated by the firm and later very generously supported by an endowment fund arranged by Derek Bowring.

'Uncle' George LeMessurier, actually a cousin, owned a small farm called LeMessurier Meadow on the old map of Kilbride which was taken partially into the Park at about the same time that the Pitts Memorial Drive was being built. The new road literally cut the property in half. I remember as a child spending some time at the farm with 'aunt' Marion (Bradshaw, from Placentia, uncle George's second wife, his first, Roberta Morry, having died, and he as well, just before I was born). Aunt Alma, mentioned earlier, also spent some time there and was recuperating from back surgery in Montreal when the Blimp, Hindenburg, flew over the Waterford valley enroute to the US, where it blew up in flames. Vicki Badcock lived there with her mother, Helena (Morry, Bertha's sister)while her father, Frank LeMessurier was overseas in WWI. When he returned, she didn't know him, as she was just a newborn when he enlisted. I haven't quite figured out all the cousin connections with the Morry's but am working on it. All can be traced back to the original Matthew, I presume. Your family tree is surely a great help in that regard, Chris. Here ends my epistle for the day.

On the Nfld-Lab-L Rootsweb mailing list on 10/03/02 it was noted that George LeMessurier held automobile license number 1313 in 1926 and gave his address as Masonic Terrace. Not sure if this is the same George, but it could not be the father of Marie, Anne and Peter as he would have only been 15 at the time. Still there could be other Georges I don't know about. These records were evidently published in the local newpaper (Evening Telegram) and were posted in the email thanks to Chris Shelley and John Baird, noting Copyright held by Blackmore-RobinsonPublishing.

According to Anne LeMessurier Lilly, her father's G. Uncle George and G. Aunt Bertha took in young George when his parents moved temporarily to California after the war. His father, Francis had been wounded in the war and perhaps was unable to care for the three children he had by his first wife and the two he already had by Helena, his second. One of the children by his first wife, Avis, also stayed in Kilbride with her G. Uncle and G. Aunt.

180806:

It seems very likely that this is the George LeMessurier responsible for the very large hand-drawn Morry/Carter family tree in the Newfoundland Archives.

031106:

He is mentioned in the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador: "LEMESSURIER, GEORGE WILLIAM (c.1862- 1943). Civil servant. Born St. John's, son of George H. and Elizabeth (Brown) LeMessurier. Married (1) Bertha Morry, (2) Marion Bradshaw. While still a teenager LeMessurier went to work for the St. John's post office, where his father also worked, and eventually became deputy minister of Posts and Telegraphs. LeMessurier and his assistant deputy, William Campbell qv. designed the pictorial issue of Newfoundland stamps released in January 1923. Replacing the Caribou series issued in 1919 to honour the Newfoundlanders who fought in World War I, the new series of stamps were striking in their portrayal of several of Newfoundland's famous scenic areas, such as the Humber River. Quidi Vidi and Placentia. A.B. Perlin (BN I, 1937). DN (July 30. 1943). ET (July 30, 1943). Awc"

From the St. John's News and Evening Telegram dated July 10, 1943, noted that he was "survived by his wife Marion, nephews Frank and Philip LeMessurier, Warrick Smith, Miss Ethal Smith, Mrs. H.F.G.D. Kirby of Harbour Grace."

301214:

From Bob Le Messurier:

"Part of the south-western end of the park [Bowring] was formerly a farm owned by Uncle George LeMessurier, Vicki's uncle, where Vicki grew up. George was first married to Bertha (Roberta) Morry and when she died he married Marion Bradshaw of Placentia.
