This person is an enigma. He has the same first name and middle initial and surname as two people in the family tree but this is not either of them. Clearly he must be related and yet I have never before found information on him until his name showed up in the Forest Rd. cemetery register at The Rooms.
I have no choice but to enter him as an unrelated individual until I can find further information that connects him to one of the existing Le Messurier families. 1862

There is a BC death record in Richmond on 19 May 1979 for a 23 year old male born on 7 Feb 1956 to a Francis Eric Lemessurier and a Rosella Jean Dyck. Since Eric did move from Newfoundland to BC, it is quite likely that this is he and his second wife and son. But it requires more research than I am prepared to do at the moment.

Email from Anne LeMessurier Lilly dated 28/08/01:
Hi Chris,
Thank you for your e-mail. I am interested in your research and would like to keep hearing from you.
I will do now what I've been putting off for too long - tell you whatI know about our branch of the family. I know that the Morry familyis originally from Bideford in Devon ( many generations ago). My Granny LeMessurier was born Helena Morry in Caplin Bay (now Calvert) in October, 1880. She grew up in Ferryland. Her mother was Victoria Matilda Winsor from Aquafort and her father was Robert Morry from Ferryland. Helena was their last child.
Dad told us this story. I feel that it should become part of the family annals because it shows how hard life was and how strong people were many years ago. My great-grandfather Robert was a sea captain and was gone for months at a time. A diphtheria epidemic broke out in Ferryland. Robert and Victoria's children were stricken with the disease. Once one child had the disease, the family was quarantined in their home, because it was so contagious. There was no medical help. My great-grandmother nursed her 7 children as best she could, but in the space of one week, 6 died. People in the community passed a coffin in through the window of her home. She would have to place her child in the coffin and push it out the window. This happened 6 times. Because of the quarantine, she was not even permitted to go to their funerals. I wonder how she maintained her sanity! My great-grandfather returned from a voyage to a wife and one child - when he had departed, he had 7 children! I've known this story for years but it still moves me profoundly that they survived such a terrible tragedy. Would we be able to do so today?! What a strong woman my great-grandmother must have been. Dad remembers her as an old lady wearing a lace cap on top of her head and sitting ramrod straight in her chair, even into her nineties. Only their eldest daughter, Bertha survived the illness. Helena, my grandmother, was born afterwards.
Helena married Frank LeMessurier from St John's in the small church on the Southern Shore road in what is now Goulds. Dad always called it the Ruby Church. My grandfather was born in May, 1879. Helena was Frank's second wife. My Dad, George, was their first child, born July 9, 1911; Victoria was their second (now Vic Badcock), born April, 1913; and Eric was their third, born 1921. Dad died in 1992, but Aunt Vic and Uncle Eric are still alive.
My Papa LeMessurier (Frank) was a sergeant in The Royal Newfoundland Regiment and was badly wounded in the Battle of the Somme, in World War I, during the July 1,1916 offensive - the day is still a day of mourning in Newfoundland. Newfoundland lost hundreds of its best and brightest young men that day. An entire regiment was almost wiped out in one morning. Papa was one of the hundreds who failed to answer roll-call the next day. He was lying in no man's land, with a serious hip wound, for 24 hours before he was rescued. He packed the wound with mud to stop the hemorrhaging. Shrapnel was still working its way out of his hip years later.
You probably remember my Dad from your many trips to Oliver's Pond in summers long ago. I remember all your family and the fun times we had swimming, boating, and playing baseball there. Dad was a wonderful storyteller, and I remember many tales of his family. I'll be glad to share them if they are of any use to you.
Hope this is of some help.
All the best!
Anne LeMessurier Lilly

BDM reported that birth was announced on 3 June 1879 in: 1) Times and General Commercial Gazette 1832-1895 2) Morning Chronicle 1865-1881
Place of birth was reported as Twillingate, not St. John's as Anne LeMessurier believes
261106: George LeMessurier family tree notes he was known as Frank
290208: Viewed his military file on microfilm at the National Archives: Attestation Paper details: Address - Masonic Terrace 5' 5 1/2" , 132 lbs., colour dark, brown hair, light gray eyes, Letter F tattooed on left arm Married with 3 children Clerk at $500 pa
After being wounded in the battle of Beaumont Hamel he was evacuated to Wandsworth Hospital and when discharged was sent home medically unfit. Rejoined for light duities later. Bullet entered his upper thigh in front and blasted away a good piece of his left buttocks where it exited. He also was almost deaf as a result of the bombardment that injured him. Later after treatment in St. John's much of his hearing was restored and he did not have to walk with a cane any more.
Earlier in the war, after the first exposure to the horrors of battle in Gallipoli he was hospitalised for what was then called "severe debility" but what would now be known as "post-traumatic stress syndrome".
150813: Francis Ernest Le Messurier enlisted in the RNR as Private, Regt. No. 853 on December 30, 1914. Unlike most of his fellow soldiers, Frank was a mature man, 35 years of age, with a wife and three children at home on Masonic Terrace in St. John's. He also left behind a good job as a clerk at a salary of $500 pa, a fine salary for those days, so enlisting meant a real commitment on his part. He was a small man, only 5 ft. 5 1/2 in. tall and weighing only 132 lbs. But what he lacked in size he made up for in grit, as his military records show. He left St. John's on the SS STEPHANO on March 20, 1915 and was a part of the British Expeditionary Force that left for the Peninsula and the fight for the Dardanelles at Gallipoli on August 20, 1915. They landed at Suvla Bay on the night of September 19-20, 1915 and were in the thick of it immediately. Like many of his fellow soldiers, he suffered terribly from that first engagement and was admitted with "Debility" (now known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) to the 54th Casualty Clearing Station on November 26, 1915 but was back with the battalion for the evacuation later that year. His name appears amongst the list of those wounded at the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, where he took a bullet wound to the hip which caused him much pain and suffering for the rest of his life. After treatment at the 29th Casualty Clearing Station, he was evacuated to Wandsworth Hospital near London on July 4, 1916. After recuperating, he was sent home to Newfoundland on September 27, 1916 for light duty. Initially he was discharged as medically unfit on February 20, 1917 due to his hip injury and hearing loss as a result of artillery bombardment during the day he spent wounded on the battle field at Beaumont Hamel before he was brought in by a stretcher crew. But he reattested for special duty militia on November 30, 1917 and was promoted to Corporal on January 1, 1918 and then to Sgt. before he was finally de-mobbed on March 30, 1919. Having spent four years as an active member of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment he spent the remainder of his working life as a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
According to notes I scanned amongst Vic Le Messurier's photos, Frank was attended to by Fanny Morry whilst he was at Wandsworth and Fanny kept her cousin Helena informed of her husband's progress and recovery.
150813:
This was what might be considered to be an advance party of remotely related Le Messuriers emigrating to the US - San Pedro, California of all places for some reason. At this time I am not familiar with the exact relationship that existed amongst the four on this sailing but the person referred to as " Ernest" is actually Francis Ernest and his family followed afterwards. One of the others mentioned is referred to as "Osborne". His name is actually Osmond.

Thomas John Simms of Baltimore designated George Le Messurier of St. John's to act as his Power of Attorney regarding primarily the disposal of his share of the massive and complex Pynn estate that had been studied in detail in his papers at The Rooms by Nimshi Crewe. The principal reason for the PA was to allow Le Messurier to arrange for a transfer of these rights to Thomas John Simm's brother, Dr. William Cauley Simms, who still resided in Newfoundland.

From: Anne Lilly [alilly@cns.nf.ca] Sent: March 11, 2003 3:08 PM To: 'Chris' Subject: RE: 1921 Census information
Hi Chris,
I can clear up some of your questions. You are correct - the younger George on the list is Dad.
George W. was Dad's great uncle and Bertha was his aunt, both blood relatives! Bertha was the eldest of Robert Morry's daughters and her sister Helena was my grandmother. There was a great age difference in the two sisters because my grandmother was born after the diphtheria epidemic which killed most of her brothers and sisters.
My grandmother Helena married Frank LeMessurier, George's nephew. It was a case of two sisters marrying into the same family. Helena was Frank's second wife. He already had three daughters with his first wife - May, Avis and Flora. So Avis was Dad's stepsister.
Dad was with "Unc" and Aunt Bertha in Kilbride because Frank, Helena and Vic left Newfoundland after he returned home wounded from the war; they lived for a time in California. Dad was going to school by this time, so he stayed with his aunt and uncle in Kilbride. He had a wonderful childhood with them. He told us many warm and funny stories about that time. I'm not sure when Papa and Granny returned home from California but it seems that Dad lived in Kilbride for quite a while; I know that he spent his summers there because Aunt Bertha always had a big birthday party for him. Uncle George and Aunt Bertha had no children. I always got the impression that Dad was the apple of their eye. Uncle George was Director of Customs and the Post Office (I'm not sure if that is the correct title). Dad told us of Uncle George taking him on a business trip to England when he was 13 years old.
Aunt Avis married William Kent, a magistrate in Corner Brook. Aunt May married Percy LeMessurier, a distant cousin. She lived in Curling, just outside Corner Brook. Both of these aunts lived to be quite elderly. Flora moved to the "Boston states" as so many Newfoundlanders did back then; I don't know any more about her and I never met her.
Boy, ask me a question and you get reams of information - I don't know just how much stuck over the years!!
All the best, Anne
P.S. Dad's birthday was July 9th not 10th; you've no doubt noticed that LeMessurier is spelled incorrectly in the census data.

Dear Ann:
Its been a long time since I bugged you for information on our common ancestry.
Today, while browsing the information on the 1921 Census on the Newfoundland GenWeb website I came across the following records:
1921 Census information from Nfld. GenWeb website:
LEMESURIER George W Kilbride M Head married 1863 Feb 55 St. John's LEMESURIER Bertha A Kilbride F Wife married 1871 Jul 40 St. John's LEMESURIER Avis Kilbride F niece single 1905 Mar 16 St. John's LEMESURIER George Kilbride M nephew single 1911 Jul 10 St. John's
The younger George is clearly your father but I have no idea why he was staying with his Uncle at the time of the Census, do you? Also this "Avis" is new to me. Is that another name for his sister, Victoria Frances (in which case the date of birth is wrong), or is it another sister I didn't know about, or is it a cousin perhaps?
The trouble with Census data is that it usually leaves you with more questions than answers, especially because enumerators were seldom very careful about dates and correct spelling of names.
Any information you can provide would certainly be welcome.
Cheers
Chris

They are hand-written copies of a, "last will and testament," written by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation. The originals were kept by the executor.
