Was a bank clerk in 1909. Served WW I in 10 LHR (Light Horse Regiment) Service No. 62, embarked 8 February 1915 Fremantle on the HMAT Mashobra A47. In 1918 No. 1 Squadron Australia Flying Corps were operating Bristol Fighters "F2b's" in Palestine. About 15 October lieutenants W H LILLY & S H HARPEE chased two Turkish DFW two seaterback biplanes to their aerodrome and then proceeded to destroy a force of six two seaters on the ground. No. 1 squadron became a foundation squadron of the RAAF on 31 March 1921. No. 1 squadron is older than its parent Air Force. Was Mentoned in despatches London Gazette 14 June 1918 p. 7058 position 58; and Australia Gazette 7 November 1918 p. 2113 position 107.
