From all that has been learned about them, it does not appear that the relationship between Gus and Mary was anything more than friendship. Indeed it may just be that Mary was a guardian angel who chose to look after Gus in his later years because he was ill and confined to a nursing home. She seems to have made arrangements for his funeral and possibly even paid for the cemetery plot and gravestone. Another man's name appears on that same gravestone - Edward R. Tracy - who died 13 years after Gus. It now appears that there was no connection between the two men except that Mary Lynch may have looked after the two of them in their declining years and at the time of their death.

The last residence would be the same as where she lived when she wrote the letter to Clara Costello after Gus's funeral in about 1963 - 2905 1st Ave. The ZIP code is the same. It is a lovely brownstone apartment building just up from the bay and only a few blocks from the space needle in a better part of town, suggesting probably she was well provided for financially.

I was very fortunate to find her in the 1940 Census because they had her name mistranscribed on Ancestry as Mary "Lunch" - one of those kinds of problems that really drives genealogical researchers nuts!

She is single, living alone in her own home at 521 West 3rd in Seattle, a house valued at $1250 which she owned outright and had lived there since at least 1935. She had 4 years of high school education. She was born in England and had taken out her first papers toward citizenship but the form does not say when she emigrated. She worked a 40 hour week - now get this - as the Store Keeper for the Longshoreman Hall! She was full time (52 weeks a year) and earned $600. That was a low income even for those days and cannot explain how she afforded to own her own home but she reported no other source of income. She did not take in borders.

It appears she emigrated between 1930 and 1935 as she does not show up as far as I can tell in the 1930 Census or on previous ones. Lacking any other information on where she came from in England I cannot search for her there. The name is too common.

This all brings me back to one of my first theories. It was most likely the union and not Mary herself who paid for the funeral and burial and it was more than likely that the only connection between Gus and Edward was that they were both union members and Mary was responsible for seeing to it that they had a decent burial.
