Notes
General:
From Giles Muir's biography of Colin Muir during the Great War:

"Colin Muir spent three years with the Highland Light Infantry, First Volunteer Brigade, City of Glasgow. In 1908, he enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry, Fifth Battalion of the United Kingdom Territorial Force Service. The Battalion was also referred to as Fifth (Reserve) (City of Glasgow) Battalion.

On Colin's application for the Territorial Force, there is a question; "Did you receive a Notice, and do you understand its meaning?" Colin answered, "Yes." There was a suggestion that a "Notice" of compulsory National Service had been sent by the Ministry.

Colin was 22 years and one month old. A later passport recorded his height as 5'21/2". Most recruitment in the Dominions had a minimum height requirement of 5'3".

In the summers of 1908 to 1913, except 1911, Colin attended military training courses at Gailes. In 1911, the training was at Troom. The courses were each about two weeks long. The strength of the military in 1908 was quite low. Early records simply use a Regimental number of 26. Later records refer to Colin Muir as 26/8973."
