BARTLETT, CAPTAIN WILLIAM ''FOLLOW ON" (fl.1800). Sealing Captain. According to L.G. Chafe (1923), William Bartlett of Brigus, great-grandfather of the famous navigator Captain Bob Bartlett qv, acquired the named "Follow On" for his determination and daring as a sealer. It is told that about the beginning of the Nineteenth Century Bartlett was out seal-hunting in a small open boat in Conception Bay. He found no ice at Baccalieu, so decided to "follow on" to Cape Bonavista. Again finding no ice he "followed on" to the Funk Islands and then to the Spotted Islands on the Labrador coast, till he found seals off Hiscock Island. Bartlett loaded his boat with seals and returned safely to Brigus, thereby eaming the epithet of "Follow On" Bartlett. R.W. Bartlett (letter, July 1981) L.G. Chafe (1923). DCM

For the next forty-two years he prosecuted the seal hunt, and the cod fishery at the fishing station established by his father at Turnavik. According to M.E.
