•  Appointment: Justice of Peace and Keeper of the Rolls, 1843 to 1851, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Note that there are references to his being appointed a JP and Keeper of the Rolls in the Colonial Papers on more than one occasion and the two mentioned here were in 1843 and 1851.

Although I show that John Benger was married to a Sarah Wylly, as I explain in the notes attached to her, this is highly improbable. Indeed, there is no mention of a wife or children in his will which was found by Barry Gaulton some years ago in the National Archives in the UK.

The unique thing about his will is that he was a slave owner - the only person known with documentary certainty to have owned slaves in Newfoundland, though there were undoubtedly others undocumented.
