280109: Notes from family tree of Wanda Garrett:
"Newspaper account relates the story of the house fire that killed several Butler and Parmiter family members. It is from the Daily News, St. John's: Four persons meet death by fire in Topsail dwelling. Three other persons jump to safety from burning building; father saves 6 month-old baby. An early morning fire which became a blazing inferno claimed the lives of four persons yesterday when the house of Mr. Alec Butler at Topsail, CB was destroyed. Dead are Cecil 25, Rex 19 and Kay 11, all children of Mr. Alec Butler and Mr. Richard Parmiter, 78, an uncle of Mrs. Butler. (Cecil Butler was an ex-member of the RAF). Mr. Butler with his wife, 15 year old daughter Joan and Phoebe Miller, a cousin, saved their lives when they jumped from second flat windows. A six-month old adopted child was saved when Mr. Butler threw it through a window into the arms of his wife waiting below. Mr. Butler having reached safety made a valiant attempt to rescue those trapped in the blazing building but was driven back by intense heat. First news of the fire reached the city at 3:06 a.m. when the alarm was received at the West End Station. A truck with a Coventry pump responded, but the fire had gained such headway that the house practically destroyed when it arrived at Topsail. The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over the Conception Bay village and its neighbours, and the Daily News extends sincere sympathy to those who have been bereaved. The remaining members of the Butler family suffering from shock and bruises are being cared for by neighbours, while the bodies of the four victims were yesterday brought to Barrett's Mortuary in the city where they will be prepared for burial, investigation is underway. Sergeant March of the C.I.D. went to Topsail yesterday to begin the investigation into the tragedy and a number of photographs were taken of the scene.
