I would estimate that this picture was taken about 1905. I am going to get my aunt to have a look at this to see if she can identify the others.

"3/ Gertrude Irene Carew - Generation 11 - b. 10 October 1886. As far as I can decipher from my notes on Cape Broyle, Irene married Peter Yard - b. abt 1873 at Admiral's Cove, Cape Broyle, NF - d. 1959 at Calvert. They were married on July 11 1904 and their children were (per 1921 Census):

Stephen (Sept. 1905), Henry (Mar. 1907), Esther (Oct. 1909), Kathleen (Nov. 1910), Arthur (Jun.1915).

Stephen lost his life at sea on the Empire Bison when she was torpedoed Nov. 1 1940 - World War II - He was married to Kitty ?? and they had a dau. Josephine.

Henry died on April 6 1944. I don't believe he ever married.

Esther married William Ledwell of Calvert. They had three daughters - Rosalee, Mary Ellen, and Ethel. She died in the early 1960s.

I don't have any information on Kathleen and Arthur. I have a vague recollection that Kathleen may have still been alive in the early 1950s when we (my mother and I) used to visit Mr. Peter Yard at his home in the Shore's Cove area.

The Yards were friends and neighbors of my mother's family - the Careys/Carews of Admiral's Cove, Cape Broyle who were not related, it seems, to the Carews of Shore's Cove, Cape Broyle."

Now here I am sure we can gain some insight by referring this to the resident expert on Carews, Enid O'Brien. Her mother was Mary Carew and their ancestors form a solid link back many generations in that part of Newfoundland, with a number of interconnections with the Morrys. Gertrude Irene was her grandaunt. Also Raelene Earle has helped me out with a good deal of information on the Carew's, though I gather this was information she had received rather than compiled from family records, since she herself is not a Carew descendent as far as I know. I will add your information tentatively, subject to verification of the details by Enid and Raelene.

Irene and Peter were separated and she lived with her daughter, Mary Ellen, in Brooklyn where she died with Alzeiheimer's disease.

Her name is mistakenly spelled Gertrude Hearn Carew on the alphabetical transcript of the Ferryland baptismal register and someone has crossed out Hearn in pencil and written in Irene.
