241212:

NGB transcript of 1921 Census does not show Esther Ann, which either means she died before then or was married by then. The fact that her two older sisters were still single at home suggests that they never married.

170119:

The names in this family are consistently misspelled Carey in the alphabetical transcript of the church register -- some stubborn cleric refusing to admit to the correct spelling of an English Protestant name.

Enid O'Brien email 01/09/00:

"John Carew (Esther's son) also was a bit of a prospector and went to Alaska with him [George William Morry]. There is some small island there called Carew island (after John). At least that is what I was told. From what I can gather John was one of those "odd-ball" eccentric characters."

[NB: this was later corrected by Enid. It was his brother Gus who went to Alaska.]

Enid O'Brien email 01/09/00:

"John (called Dolly) was more than a bit eccentric or "off the wall"

From Enid in response to information from Rick Morry, January 22, 2014:

John also went away. I didn't know he went to Alaska but somehow I am not surprised. From anything I read about him I think he worked hard, drank hard and didn't take life too seriously. I have an account about John being a skipper on his 30 ton schooner the "Helen C" which was sinking outside Chance Cove. He told his crew to go ashore in the life boat and he stayed on the boat all night because he didn't want the wreckers to get her. When morning came and the crew went out to get him the boat had sunk and John swam ashore. Later he ended up in Boston, at first he had his own schooner which he probably lost and later was fishing for a company up there. I haven't been able to find out when he died but it was probably in the 1940s because he is not mentioned in the obit of his sister, Annie McNamara.

050919 from Enid O'Brien:

was Augustine 'Gus' Carew who had dealings with George in Seattle. I know he did go to Alaska and later worked at long shore work in Seattle. Gus had a brother John who went to Boston but I don't think he ever went to Seattle.

As far as I know I don't think John ever married but he did have 2 illegitimate children. One child, John Sullivan Carew with Catherine Sullivan (who later md James Kavanagh). This child went by John Kavanagh (md Mary Agnes Reddigan) and had a large family. Catherine Sullivan Kavanagh had a second child, Clara Kavanagh, with James Kavanagh who married Stephen Maddox and had a large family with him.

John's second child, Mary Leahy/Lahey, (dgt John Carew/Bridget Lahey) from Cape Broyle married Angus Duncan from Quebec. They lived in Quebec and had 4 children. Bridget Lahey went on to marry Patrick Duggan from Cape Broyle and had 6 other children.

John died in Massachusetts according to my aunt between 1939-1946. I couldn't find a record of his death but my aunt told me he died in a Fisherman's Home there.
