300114:
The spelling of his forename name as well as the forenames and middle names of others in the Clift and Le Messurier family are variously spelled Shannon and Shannan. This difference appears to have originated with the arrival of Jesse and Flora in Newfoundland from Greenock and the fact that Jesse seemed to go by the spelling Shannon while Flora went by Shannan. It is possible they were not literate despite coming from a merchant class family in Scotland.
250715:
In the file MG 400 at The Rooms, a box containing a small amount of papers belonging to the Stabb family, there is a family tree of the descendants of Archibald Liddell which seems to have been there to assist in the division of the assets of an estate. In this very long family tree (about 6-7 feet in length) there is a limited bit of information on the Elizabeth Liddell who married James Shannan Clift. It indicates for example that their only surviving son John died without marrying. Also her parents were John Liddell and Harriet Cleveland and her grandfather was the aforementioned Archibald Liddell.

210623:
I never realised before this evening that Noah Clift, who was involved in so many litigations in the Ferryland court system, was actually the son Sarah Graham, sister of Matthew Morry I's wife. And not only that, his brother, Christopher Graham Clift, was the executor and sole heir to the estate of Matthew's spinster daughter, Esther Graham Morry.
There doesn't seem to be any indication on paper of any animosity over these things but that may simply be reflective of the lack of written materials that have come down to us from the Morry family and their businesses. Those papers, if the still existed, were kept and presumably destroyed by Leonard and Marcella Canning when they orchestrated the will of Miss Lizzie Morry in their favour so that they inherited the property of Matthew Morry III and all of his papers and other belongings.
in 1841 he had 3 of the daughters of William and Priscilla Sweetland living with him: Ann, Priscilla and Mary. He also had his nephew Noah Bartlett Clift living with him.

010419:
I can offer no explanation for why this person's middle name was Morry except that his mother was a Le Messurier and they had close family ties with the Morry family. The Clift family had no such marital ties. Thomas Graham Morry was married to his aunt, Eliza Shirley Huthcings Le Messurier.
According to an indenture filed with the Northern District Court at the ROD (NDC Vol 23 Fol 157-158 Thomas Foley To Charles N Clift et al 07-12-1885), Charles N. Clift and Shannon M. Clift were partners in the firm of Clift Wood & Company which had advanced a substantial amount of money speculatively in mining operations run by a Thomas Foley in Bay de Verde and White Bay and were about to sink some more funds into these explorations. These two partners were almost certainly Charles Neil Clift and his nephew Shannon Morry Clift.
