070217 from Anthony Ludington's Sexton Family History:
Catherine Elizabeth was the sixth child of Edward Cullen (23) and Mary-Ann Burns. The marriage of John Edward Sexton and Catherine Helena Cullen took place on 15th February 1886 at St Mary's Catholic Church, Lancefield Vic. The marriage was celebrated by the Rev Father Galbolen and the witnesses were Catherine's brother Thomas and her sister Theresa. Upon their marriage certificate Catherine is described as being a farmer's daughter and is 20 years of age whilst John is described as a farmer and being of 28 years of age. After their marriage the couple settled at Toolleen on John Edwards farming property.
The couple had 14 children these being Cornelius (26) B1/1/1887, Lucy Mable Ethel (27) B14/4/1888, John Charles Vincent (48) B11/9/1890, Catherena Mary (50) B22/11/1891, Caroline Elizabeth Ruby (138) 4/1/1893, Thomas Kevin (139) B21/9/1893, James Martin (140) B7/4/1897, Walter Patrick (141) B7/4/1897, Sussanah Ruby Elizabeth (313) B18/10/1899, Kevin Joseph Aloysius (318) B25/11/1901, Veronica Mary (319) B16/3/1903, Edward (Ned) Leo (320) B26/11/1905, Hilary Percival (331) B3/3/1907 and Eileen Alicia (344) B1908. Catherine had many joys in her life but also her share of unhappiness the death of her father Edward Cullen (23) in 1895 by his own hand at Lake Rowan Vic. The child deaths of Caroline Elizabeth Ruby (138) in 1893 aged three months from an illness. The accidental deaths of Thomas Kevin (139) in 1894 from a shooting accident and the death of James Martin (140) in 1897 while playing a horse game with the younger children. In addition she was tho see the deaths of her son John Charles Vincent (48) aged 28 in 1918 and her daughter Veronica Mary (319) aged 16 in 1919 from the Spanish Influenza Virus that was devastating the world at that time.
After the death of her husband Catherine lived on at Toolleen. With the death of her husband, Catherine now faced the task of raising a family of 10 children by herself. In 1914 Catherine was awarded first prize at the Bendigo Show for her exhibition of a model of fancy carved butter. (See John Edward Sexton (22) Photo Album) She was indeed a very gifted woman, being renowned for her fine knitting, crocheting and fancy butter. Not only was Catherine known for her beautiful fancy work nut also for her cooking. According to one of her niece's her Aunt was the best cook ever.
The years of the First World War passed quickly with Catherine's and John's family growing up and leaving home. Upon the death of Veronica, Cornelius (1) (Catherine's father in law) comforted Catherine by saying it was much better for her to lose a daughter than a son. This of course did not comfort her as she was also suffering from Spanish Influenza. Cornelius was not trying to be nasty or cause Catherine more sorrow, but was trying to console her to the fact that she would still have her sons to work the farm and provide a living for her.
Catherine often had visits from her married daughters and sons with their children. Her Grandchildren were always excited to be visiting their Grandmother who was described as being gentle, kind and loving towards them.
During the years before her own death, Catherine spent much of her time with her Grandchildren. One of Cis's (Catherena Mary (50)) and Harry Thomas's (51) children can remember her Grandmother teaching her to knit and also trying to wash her brothers feet in a dish. Catherine was minding this family of six whilst their Mum and Dad was attending a church mission at Bridgewater Vic (Bridgewater is a town on the Calder Highway between Bendigo and Inglewood in Victoria).
Although looking back over the years it appears that Catherine had a strong devotion to the Catholic faith. It was said that on one occasion in 1893 when returning home from Elmore Vic in the horse and gig having taken her very ill baby Ruby she became lost in the open country when darkness set in. She prayed earnestly that she may find her way home and with this a light appeared in the sky. Catherine followed the light as it moved and the light lead her to the front gate of their farm. The light disappeared! Her prayers were answered.
Catherine was also known more particularly for her strong devotion to Saint Joseph and Saint Therese "The Little Flower" to give her a sign if an intention she was praying for had been answered. Fresh red rose petals were found in one of her cream cans on the farm there is no human explanation as to how they were there and how they has remained so fresh. One of her Grand Daughter's still has some of these petals today!
On the 3rd of November 1937 Catherine died aged 67 years. She had suffered a long battle with bowel cancer and had known when she was going to die. This she knew, because she had prayed for a sign of her death and three weeks before she died, there were three knocks which seemed to come from the house walls. There were several people in the house at the time and they all remarked how the knocks seemed to come from within the house walls. Catherine quietly said she knew what they were. Before she died Catherine was staying at her daughter Cis (Catherena) (50) and Harry Clarke (51) and their family at Derby (Bridgewater Vic), before moving to stay with her Daughter May O'Callaghan (27) at 23 Mariners Reef Rd Maryborough Vic. That same day May (27) learnt of the accident that had killed her husband Jack (28) who was returning from the football at Castlemaine Vic. Catherine again faced the loss of a loved one as May's husband Jack was said to be loved by all. Catherine died not long after this on 3/11/1937 at Maryborough Vic and is buried at Runnymede Cemetery Victoria.
