DUDER, CHARLES R. (1819?-1879). b St. Mary's Church, Devon, England; MHA Twillingate and Fogo 1869-78; chairman of the Board of Works 1874-78; d St John's 26 Jan. Duder came to Newfoundland in the 1830s to work with the firm of E. J. Duder Sr. (likely his brother), a St John's merchant with branches in Notre Dame Bay. He was elected MHA for Twillingate and Fogo in 1869 as an Anticonfederate, supporting Charles J. F. Bennett. Duder was re-elected as a Bennett supporter in 1873, but shortly thereafter switched his support to Frederick B. T. Carter. This, coupled with the resignations of Bennett supporters Thomas R. Bennett and Henry Renouf, brought down the government. Duder then joined an administration formed by Carter, as chairman of the Board of Works. RHC
