010116:
According to Enid O'Brien, Sir Brian Dunfield commissioned a researcher to prepare his family history leading back to the marriage of Anne [Carter] Hill (then a widow) to Capt. Henry Sweetland, along one line. Presumably this family history should be amongst his papers at the Archives and Special Collections Section of the Queen ELizabeth II Library at MUN (COLL-006).
He had considerable dealings with Nimshi Crewe at the Archives during the 1960s when he began to do his family history research and was made aware of the connection to the Sweetlands and Morrys in Ferryland by Nimshi.
According to his biography on the MUN website, the community of Dunfield in Placentia Bay is named after him.
190916:
Here is his bio by Edward Roberts in Peter Cashin's memoirs "My fight for Newfoundland" (Cashin clearly despised him):
Dunfield, (Sir) Brian (1888-1968)
A lawyer and businessman (he was a director of Job Brothers, 1918-23,
and Hawes and Company, of London, 1923-28), Dunfield failed in three
attempts to enter the House ofAssembly, in 1913 (Trinity, as a supporter of
Edward Morris, qv, and the People's Party); in 1923 (St. John's East, as an
Independent); and in 1926 (as a Conservative in a by-election in Fortune
Bay). He was senior counsel with the Justice Department between 1928 and
1932, and Deputy Minister of Justice (after Commission, the Secretary, the
equivalent position) until his appointment to the Supreme Court in 1939.
Dunfield conducted the 1942 enquiry into the Knights of Columbus fire,
which cost the lives of 100 servicemen and civilians, and played a leading
role in the development of public housing and town planning in St. John's
and Corner Brook. He, Leonard Outerbridge, qv, and Albert Walsh, qv,
were knighted in 1949, immediately before Confederation. They were the
last three Newfoundlanders to receive the honour.
The Dunfields and their children were neighbours of PJC and Blanche
Cashin on Waterford Bridge Road in St. John's during the 1920s and 1930s.

170821:
Here is just one of many pieces of correspondence between Nimshi Crewe and Brian Dunfield. I copied it because it seems that it may be the source, or possibly a secondary source, of the old family lore that William Sweetland essentially abandoned his children when his wife Prisicilla Morry died and that it was then he chose to move away from Ferryland and accept the appointment as magistrate in Bonavista.
Nemishi Crewe Papers
Sweetland By 1790 the mercantile family in Ferryland which never has proliferated widely in Nfld was established at Caplin Bay, leading merchants with a branch in Ferryland.
Its founder Henry Sweetland had come from Topsham not much before 1790.
He had married a widow, Mrs. Hill in 1785, daughter of [ Ed: Surrogate] Robert Carter of Ferryland. A descendent of Hill lived in St. John's, Mrs. Helena LeMessurier of 1 Blackmarsh Road.
The business closed in 1830 and the premises sold in 1840 in Royal Gazette.
The Ferryland Sweetlands have no connection with either the English Harbour or Bonavista Sweetlands.
Note from Nemishi: "I believe that Rev. Bertram Jones, Angl.Clergyman at Bonavista where in 1851 he buried my forbear Susannah (Mrs. Thos. Cole)later married at Harbour Grace another daughter of Benjamin Sweetland and that, he returned to England where they both died years ago."
Records, Brian Dunfield Letter to him from N.Crewe: Henry and Ann (Carter Hill) had three children.
William married Pricilla Morry, very probably his stepsister. She died young, leaving a young family. From a letter (in the possession of the LeMessuriers) he deserted them and they were raised by Sweetland and Morry relatives. By 1840 he was Magistrate in Bonavista and died there 20 Feb 1864 at 75. The letter says he gave his children no support.
Before leaving Ferryland William composed a never-published history of Nfld in 3 Vols. I have one, Gerry Oppenheimer the other 2. A diary of his is in the NF Archives.
He married at Bonavista Elizabeth Alexander, widow.
Benjamin (your great grandfather) for the greater part of his life was Magistrate at Trinity. ' He married Miss Gaden, their dau married Alexander Warren [Ed: Bremner?] as his second wife; of this marriage you and Mrs. Angel are the only children I know of. [Ed: The father of Brian and his sister Mrs. Angel was Henry Dunfield, so this reference is unclear].
Helena (nee Mom) LeMessurier had in her possession a letter which showed that William Sweetland virtually deserted the children of his first wife PricillaMorry, and let them be brought up by various others.
And these words appear as a brief obituary in the newspapers:
SIR BRIAN DUNFIELD
He was born in St. John's April 10, 1888, son of Canon Henry and Helen M.
Isobel (Bremner) Dunfield, eldest of four (3 sisters, Mary, Esther, and Joyce.).
He was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in 1911. He was made a judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland in 1939, and continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1960. He died March 19, 1968.

There is correspondence between her and Nimshi Crewe in 1960 and later concerning the history of the Sweetland, Kirke and Calvert families, which Nimshi believed, based on information provided by her, to be related to one another.
