310807: Email from Margaret Dickson: " You will note that I now accept that it was a Mary Morrey, daughterof Matthew Morrey and Mary Graham who married Arthur Kemp, and therefore your Aunt's attachment of the William Prinn/ Mary Morrey marriage to that Mary is wrong.

Arthur Kemp and his wife had many children and almost all baptised at the Presbyterian church.

Presbyterian Baptisms - Charlotte Kemp daughter of Arthur Kemp and Betsey (why was she called Betsey??, or is his wife another error of recording?)) Bap 34.4.1833 Henry Nichols Kemp son of AK & Betsey K bap 5.5.1825 Elizabeth Anne Kemp, daughter of AK & Betsey K bapt March 6 1822 Benjamin K son of Arthur K and Betsey K bap 6.3.1822

Also Presbyterian baptism of Mary Morrey 6.10.1789 child of Matthew Morrey and Mary Graham. Honor Caroline baptism Oct 4 1791" " This proves Matthew was a Presbyterian adherent at one time Thesefacts all taken from fiche of originals.

I also found 3 marriages for Mr Arthur Kemp !! 1) Mary Coming 1.4.1802 St Sav 2) Mary Morrey 21.11.1811 St Sav. When did this one die. (before 1817) (Note I am not claiming her as ours now) 3) Betsey Innes St Sav 5.1.1817 Arthur and his wife Elizabeth and family were on 1841 census. - He was a shipwright journeyman. I think he died before 1851."

211009: What never occurred to Margaret, and what has since become obvious, is that there were at least three Arthur Kemps in Dartmouth at this time, all getting married and raising families at about the same time. This is what led to the confusion.

070412: It is a good guess, but unproven, that Arthur Kemp and Ann Phillips are the parents of Arthur Kemp. However a word of caution is necessary because it appears there may have been at least two Arthur Kemps contemporaneous with each other in Dartmouth at the time that this Arthur married Mary Morrey so it is possible that his parents were others in that parish by the same surname.

I just discovered this baptismal record on a transcript of the St. Saviour baptisms 1813-1820, published in booklet form as Vol. 137A by the Dartmouth Family History Society. It reads: "Surname and Forename: Kemp, John Morry. Parents: Arthur Kemp and Mary [no maiden name given as this was not the practice at St. Saviour]. Occupation: Merchant. Abode/Notes: St. Saviours. Private. Date 12 04 1815."

It is remarkable that after all the confusion that has surrounded this marriage over the years no one ever came upon this record of birth before. One wonders if the child died in infancy since there is apparently no other record of his existence. [NB later discovered more records in Census]

The birth is recorded as "private". There is no explanation for that notation.

It would appear that he never married.
