BDM notes that marriage was reported on 23 Feb 1843 in: 1) Newfoundlander 1827-1884
Bride was the eldest daughter of Matthew Morry of Caplin Bay. She was referred to as Mary Morry, not Eliza, in the newspapers.
Notes
General:
15/9/99 According to Enid O'Brien in email to Gillian dated 8/9/99: Mary Morry B. July 10, 1815-Died 19 Jan/1857. She had 8 children very quickly and died young. Her descendants include an Anglican Canon, and other religious clergy. She married Peter Paint LeMessurier.
Discrepancies in date of death probably attributable to one being date of death and other date of burial.
180806:
BDM notes death notice appeared on 24 Feb 1857 in: 1) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807- 2) Times and General Commercial Gazette 1832-1895 3) Public Ledger 1820-1882 (issues available begin 1827) 4) Patriot and Terra Nova Herald 1833-1890 5) Express (Newfoundland Express) 1851-1876

Mary LeMESSURIER Barrens 40 yrs Feb 24 1857 I cannot offer an explanation for the long gap between death and burial. Both dates are supported in the registers so the gap appears real. Perhaps the ground was simply too hard to dig in that winter.
150813:
The main photo was found in the collection of Victoria Le Messurier Badcock and scanned by me in June 2013. At first I could not bring myself to believe that I was so lucky to have found a photographic portrait of Mary Morry, even though there are in existence known portraits, either photos, daguerreotypes or paintings of four of her brothers: John Henry, Matthew, Robert and Frederick Clift. The captions on the back were not that helpful in confirming the identity of the womand shown, even though it apparently stated that it was she. I was of the impression that the photo looked too recent. But when I checked the name of the photographic studio - C&D Chisholm, I learned that this was Colin and Duncan Chisholm and that they were amongst the earliest photographers in Newfoundland, only operating in the 1850s and 1860s. This was proof positive of the vintage and the identity of the subject in my view.

The above transcript of the marriage record also errs in that it assumed incorrecly that the "Pro-Cathedral" where the marriage took place was the Protestant Cathedral. It was in fact St. Thomas's which was then acting as the "Pro-Cathedral" after the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was badly damaged in the Great Fire the year previous.
The reception took place at the Post Office because Henry Le Messurier was then the Post Master for Newfoundland.
The lengthy article describing the nuptials which was published in the Tribune (included in the Media folder) is remarkable. My speculation on the cause of it differs from that of Enid. I enclose both below.
Hi Rick and Enid:
I suspect Enid has already seen this so this is primarily intended for Rick's "amusement"?
A fellow by the name of Blaine Dooley posts on Facebook every day several segments he finds in old newspapers that will be of interest to others. Today he posted two entries from the St. John's Tribune (a long since defunct newspaper) which announce the marriage of Fenwick Crane. The articles are date on 22 August 1893, actually the day after their marriage. One is just a brief two line mention of the marriage of Fenwick Crane and "Minnie" [sic] Morry. This would have appeared in the classified ads where births, marriages and deaths are announced. The other is a lengthy article evidently written by a misogynistic friend of Fenwick's who quite clearly was not impressed that his friend had taken the plunge. He refers to him as having "joined the great army of benedicts", presumably suggesting he was a traitor to the cause like Benedict Arnold is viewed in the US (though indeed he was a true Loyalist as Canadians are concerned!). But to add insult to injury, in this entire lengthy article the writer refuses to descend to even naming the bride! He does mention the names of the bridesmaids and even manages to mangle the spelling of Lena (Helena) Morry's surname as Morrey!
I suspect the brief classified was also written by the same disgruntled friend because a woman would normally be given the dignity of being named in her marriage announcement by her proper Christian name, not her nickname.
I have never seen anything of the like published before. It is indeed remarkable. My suspicion is that the writer was a gay man who had designs on Fenwick himself.
And Enid's response:
Good Morning Chris/Rick
I was busy yesterday and didn't notice Blaine's clippings. Chris, like you, I really don't know what to make of it. It was obviously aimed at Minnie. I was thinking it might have been written by a woman, maybe a girlfriend who was jilted by Frenwick. Who ever wrote it was very angry and implied she didn't even look good, ie, THE GENTLEMEN AT LEAST ASSERTED THAT SHE LOOKED CHARMING meaning that the women didn't? The bride wore BRIGHT WHITE OR VERY PALE CREAM - a lot of difference.
You would have to know the circumstances, maybe it was a joke-stir friend.
Either way it was in poor taste and I can't picture anyone writing that in a newspaper on one of the happiest day's of a couple's life
I guess we will never know the story behind it.

Enid O'Brien email 03/05/00:
"Mary "Minnie" Morry married Fenwick Crane on Aug. 21, 1894 in the Anglican Cathedral. Fenwick was an accountant with Job Brothers. They had 6 children: Reginald (b. 5/10/1894) who moved to Juno Beach, Florida. I don't know if he was married. Hilda Marjorie (1895-1920 single, and is buried in the C of E cemetery, Forest Road, Oswald Morry Crane 28/4/1898-25/10/1915 buried at Cof E Cemetery, Forest Road, Susan Mildred md Lieutenant Colonel James Janson from Surrey, England, Constance (was bridesmaid @ sister's wedding,) and Clarence (Royal Navy)."
Enid O'Brien email 07/08/00:
"Re: Mary (Morry) Crane, dgt of Henry Sweetland Morry. I am afraid I do not have a birthdate for Mary and I have two conflicting dates of death. On the headstone in the Anglican cemetery on Forest Road her date of death is given as October 7, 1930. However, Evening Telegram of September 27th, 1930 states that she died at midnight on Tuesday (September 26th). So, I don't think it could go in the newspaper on September 27th if she died October 7th?"
Enid O'Brien email 220114:
"Regarding the age of Mary (b. 1866-D. 7/10/1930) Fenwick (B1862 Died 6/12/1943) as they were md in 1894 she would have been 28 yrs when she was md and he would have been 32 years old (b. 1862 - died 21/8/1894). Unless I am calculating wrong there should be no reason not to have 6 children."
Based on all of the above I am going with the later birth date as more credible and am also adding the "death date" in October as a burial date.
Additional information from Enid passed to Sue Crane on April 13, 2014:
Hi Sue,
I am just now getting around to writing you a bit more about the Cranes that would interest you and maybe your parents. It concerns the wedding of Susan Crane (your namesake) dgt of Fenwick Crane/Mary "Minnie" Morry.
Evening Telegram June 27, 1927-7
Bunting is flying today on Job's and the Royal Stores premises in honour of the marriage of Miss Susie Crane, dgt of Mr Fenwick Crane, which took place this afternoon. (My note Job's and Royal Stores were very large mercantile businesses in St. John's)
Even. Tel. June 28, 1927-6
A very pretty wedding at the Cathedral of St. John Baptist took place when Susan Mildred Crane became the bride of Lt. Col. James Theodore Janson, Epson, England. The ceremony was performed by the Rt.. Rev, The Lord Bishop of Newfoundland, assisted by Rev. Briton. Given away by her father she wore a period gown of silk....... Bridesmaid was Miss Constance Crane (sister of the bride), little Miss Hilda Brinston was trainbearer. Mr Harry B. Carter was bestman, ushers were Maurice Job Taylor, Bertram Ellis and Reginal Knight. Reception at Hotel Newfoundland, residing in Ottawa, Ontario.
Evening Telegram June 10, 1945
The engagement is announced fo Constance Kemp, dgt of the late Mr and Mrs Fenwick Crane to Stanley Arthur Jeffries of London, England.
Even. Tel. June 19, 1945
Connie Crane to Stanley Jeffries on June 17, 1944 at the Cathedral of St. John the Devine. Given in marriage by Fred Bradshaw, the bridesmaid was Olive Rennie. The bestman was Eric Gough. The reception was held at the home of Mr and Mrs. Fred Bradshaw, Military Road.
Enjoy your day.
With kind regards.

060714 from Enid O'Brien to Rick Morry:
1. Mary Crane's birthdate
I have not found a birth record for Mary "Minnie" Crane so her birthdate is very liquid depending on what record you want to believe.
(i) 1921 Census, St. John's Mary is listed as follows
Mary Crane (female) Married, Wife, Born June 1871, age 50 years, Born at Ferryland.
If we believe the headstone for her mother it is stated that she died in 1870 so Mary couldn't possibly be born in 1871 so either the headstone or census is in error.
(ii) Vital Statistics. Died at St. John's on 8/10/1930, Mary Crane, Diagnosis Pulmonary TB. Religion Church of England, Age 67 years, Buried Church of England Cemetery. This would put her birth date as 1863.
(iii) On December 15/1915 Mary is sailing on the Stefano from St. John's to New York and her age is recorded as 49 years. This would place her birth date as 1866.
I notice that Mary is of the Church of England faith, as was her father. but all her siblings are RC. I wonder if she was raised by a CE relative and maybe baptised in one of the other churches - just a thought.
Regarding Enid's quotation of the Vital Statistics death record, this would appear to be her own transcript taken either from a photocopy or the LDS microfilm. On the NGB website there is an abbreviated version given:
Vital Records
Register of Deaths
St. John's City District
1930
Book 10
PAGES 92 - 102
SOURCE: LDS Microfilm Reels
Oct. 08 Queens Rd. Pulm. T.B. CRANE Mrs. Mary F C.O.E. 67 C.O.E.
I note that, while the date is ostensibly the date of death, the last item on the entry is place of interment and I suspect that the date therefore may be the date of interment or even the date that the entry was made in the vital statistics. The age given is also in doubt as she had several other dates of birth given for her and this does not accord with any of them.
100714:
In further information sent to Rick Morry, Enid provided this obituary:
Evening Telegram Wed. Oct 8, 1930, p. 4
Passed away at midnight on Tuesday, Mary, wife of Fenwick Crane. Late res 35 Queen's Road. (there was no age given in obit). However, it might explain the difference in the date of the Vital Stats entry as it gives her date of death as Oct 8th. As it took place at midnight it might have been registered as the 8th. Vital Stats on Oct 8/1930, Mary Crane, age 67 yrs, ie born 1863. Headstone (Anglican Cemetery) Mary Crane, Died Oct 7, 1930, which coincides with the Telegram. As I mentioned before the Ship Manifest for 11/12/1915 gives her age 49 yrs which would make her birthday as 1866.

Of course it is impossible to say with absolute certainty which "Mr. Morey" was the father of Mary in this register entry. But after much debate and consideration, Margaret Dickson had concluded that it was Richard Morrey, the ancestor of her husband, Ray. I mulled it over and at length agreed with her.
But I still retain a measure of doubt since there a number of other Morry men in Dartmouth at that time raising families and it would seem to me likely that one of them must have married a woman who was a Dissenter, thus the reason for Mary and her sister, Honour Caroline, being Christened at the Flavel Congregational Meeting House.
It occurs to me that it was not unlikely that this could have been Matthew Morry married to Mary Graham, since Mary Graham, just from her name, would have roots in Scotland and may have been Presbyterian in orientation. Countering this argument is the fact that we know that all of their other children were Christened at St. Saviour's. But there is still room for debate on account of the fact that I cannot find a baptism record for Mathew and Mary's daughter, Mary, in any of the other church registers I have examined.
On balance, however, it seems far more likely that she is a daughter of Richard Morey and Mary Downing, all of whose other children were baptised, so far as we know, at the Presbyterian dissenters church so today I am removing this record as applying to the daugher of Matthew Morry and Mary Graham.• Alt. Note that both were literate. But what I find curious is that no relative of Mary's attended as witness. This may be an inidication of how few of her relatives remained in Dartmouth by that time.

I have been researching my husbands ancestors in depth for some time.I had arrived at the story of the families from Stoke Gabriel who crossed to Dartmouth and from there many went to Newfoundland etc. Until the time I discovered your website, I think I had muddled up some of the generations of the THREE Matthew Morry's. Thanks
Re MARY MORRY b 1789 who married first to Arthur Kemp and then to William Prin- a shipwright.( married in 1814 at Dartmouth). She had 2 daughters, Eliza and Mary. Daughter Mary Prin married William Downing. They then lived in Torquay, Dartmouth and then Kingsbridge (where he is buried- have seen readable gravestone). In 1901 she (ie Widow Mary Downing) was in London at the address of her son Philip Downing. Philip Downings eldest daughter, Ethel May Downing was my husbands grandmother.
We now live not too far from Stoke Gabriel and Dartmouth. We live at Teignmouth, S Devon.
Do contact us if its helpful Margaret and Ray Dickson

131206: Information provided by Margaret Dickson after personally scanning the microfiche of the original records of the Presbyterian Church in Dartmouth: "Oct 6 1789 Mary Daughter of Mr Morry". This is NOT the Mary who was daughter of Matthew and Mary Graham as Aunt Jean had recorded because they were not Presyterian - neither was baptised as such, nor were any of their other children and nor were they married or buried in that church. This mix-up needs to be rectified. There WAS a Mary, who was daughter of Matthew and Mary Graham and who married Arthur Kemp. We know that for certain. But this is NOT she. She did not marry for a second time to William Prinn as Aunt Jean's records show because Arthur Kemp was still living when the marriage of William Prinn to Mary Morrey was solemnsied, so it was a different Mary Morrey. Where Matthew and Mary Graham's daughter was baptised is still a mystery.

Note that both were literate. Mary Morry would not have been Mary Graham, wife of Matthew Morry, as she died the year previous. That means it was most likely his sister Mary and she would have still been a spinster at that time (no married name).

Margaret was at least partly correct. There is an error in Aunt Jean's and hence Geoffrey William's record of where Mary was christened. She was indeed Christened at the Presbyterian Meeting House. This is found in the church records now available online on Ancestry, Family Search and elsewhere. There is NO record of Mary being Christened at St. Saviour's as Aunt Jean and Geoffrey believed. This seeming anomalous event of having a child Christened at the Presbyterian church may have to do with the name of the child. She was being named after her mother, Mary Graham, and being of Scottish origins she was most likely a Presbyterian herself when she married Matthew Morry but agreed to have the majority of her children Christened in the C of E with this one exception.
