I am at a loss to explain how Catherine Mainwaring could be shown as a wife of Gilbert Clapp since his wife mentioned in his will is named Mary Shea and he and she are shown as the parents of all of their children baptised at the Anglican Cathedral in St. John's.

I am revising the parenthood now and leaving her name as a possible earlier wife of Gilbert Clapp, though I believe this not to be the case. If I can ever prove that I will remove her name completely. That will leave very much up in the air where the name Mainwaring came from in this family.

This is the only reference I have found so far to a woman of that name in Newfoundland and from this information it seems clear that she was in no way related to Gilbert Clapp. She would have been born ca 1790 and therefore old enough to be his mother, but we know that was not the case.
