He had an illegitimate son who was named Robert McLea by the boy's mother, Mary Anne McGee when she had him christened at the Basilica on 9 August 1867. Before or shortly after that Robert disappeared to New York. Nothing is known of whether he contributed to the raising of the child or not. There is no evidence that he ever married.
