140413:
I cannot say with certainty that the SSDI entry I found was for this Audrey Abbott but it seems highly likely because it was issued in New York, where she lived most of her life, the year of birth was correct, and she died in New Jersey, where here father died according to his SSDI record. So it appears he moved there to be with her in his last years.
011017 from Carol Kramer:
As for Audrey, she married but the marriage was annulled very quickly. She remained single the rest of her life and lived with Joyce and James. I remember her fondly.

I have no information on this man other than Mom's word that he was her uncle and married to her father's youngest sister "Elsie" of whom I also had no prior knowledge before Mom identified her in the group picture I have included in Elsie's scrapbook.
Because Tommy Ricketts, Newfoundland's only VC, appears in this picture and others taken with the Wheelers at about the end of the war, I suspect that Jake is the man described in the information below as one of the first 500 (Blue Puttees), which I have copied from the Newfoundland's Grand Banks website:
JACOB ABBOTT Reg. No. 168 (No Photo) Enlisted, Sept. 3, 1914; British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Nov. 14, 1915; Admitted to Hospital, Suez, Feb. 23, 1916; Embarked Alexandria for British Expeditionary Force, Aug. 27, 1916; Rejoined Battalion in the field. Sept. 21, 1916, Wounded, Gueudecourt, Oct. 12, 1916; Rejoined Battalion, Nov. 18, 1916; Awarded Military Medal, Jan. 14, 19l8; Returned to Newfoundland on furlough July 27, 1918; Demobilized, St. John's, Feb. 15, 1919.
290208: Viewed and copied main parts of his military records at the National Archives: Had 15 missing teeth. DATE 03 SEP 1914 PLAC St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada
130413: The 1930 US Census shows him living as a roomer, a widower, without any mention of his three young daughters. In the 1940 Census, two daughters, Joyce and Audrey appear at an orphanage called Hopewell Society in NYC where they are both attending highschool. But there is no mention of Myrtis in either the 1930 or 1940 Census and I think it is possible that her mother may have killed her when she committed suicide.
I found this description of the Hopewell Society on Brooklynhistory.org:
The Hopewell Society of Brooklyn was incorporated in 1870 as the Society for the Aid of Friendless Women and Children. Its building was located at 20 Concord Street between Fulton and Washington Streets. The Society administered aid to destitute women and children, providing temporary housing, employment assistance, and educational and recreational programs. The Society's name was legally changed to the Hopewell Society of Brooklyn in 1921, and a year later the Society moved into a larger building, known as Hopewell House, at 218 Gates Avenue. In 1928 another building on Monroe Street was donated to the Society and was converted into a home and educational center for adolescent girls. The Society discontinued its programs for women in 1942, though it later began providing housing for elderly women at another property on Monroe Street.
020314: He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in battle at Broembeek, Belgium in the Battle of Ypres.

Enlist. Age: 22
Military Medal
London Gazette, January 14th, 1918.
Action Date, October 9th, 1917 '96 Broembeek.
On the evening of October 9th, 1917, the Transport were taking rations to the Battalion in the front line when a shell burst among them killing the Transport Officer, four of his men, and wounding another. These men, notwithstanding difficulties from shell fire, safely delivered the rations to Brigade Headquarters.
041017:
Information from Carol Kramer. A man who is valiant in battle is not necessarily so in private life as this shows:
"Well, your grandmother was right to have a hate on for Jake. He was more than abusive. He was a pedophile. He molested several extended family members as young children, both male and female. In all likelihood, he molested his own daughters. In fact my mother believes that is why Audrey's one and only marriage ended so abruptly. After the honeymoon, she was apparently traumatized, and returned to live with Joyce and Jimmy and had the marriage annulled."
011017 from MIlitary File:
- Suffered from venereal disease while overseas and was treated again later in St. John's.
- 14 Oct. 1916, suffered a gun shot wound to the right upper extremeity

There is some doubt about her full name. I had Joyce Murtis Darby Abbott but I think that is a mistake as Murtis is her sister's main name. There may have been some confusion in the information given to me by Mom late in her life when she was suffering from dementia.

All traces of Myrtis, whether under that name or any of her other names, disappear after her mother dies. I know from Mom that her mother committed suicide, deliberately or not, apparently in an effort to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. I'm wondering if Mom got the whole story and if it is possible that it was actually a murder suicide and that she took Myrtis with her. US death records are not easy to access online unless a person had a Social Insurance Number. The only way to find out more about the death/disappearance of Myrtis would be to go to New York and access the records manually.
Accident happened on Thursday, June 30, 1938, during a visit to relatives in Pawlett, Vermont, but she died in hospital in Granville, NY, nearby and just across the state boundary.
