They had all daughters (4 or 3). Eldest girl (Joyce Darby). Joyce never married and lived with her father after her mother died. One died riding her bicycle.

When Mom was in New York for the World's Fair her mom wouldn't let her visit them because he was then a widower and (in her mind) of suspect character.

111009: I somehow had her date and place of death wrong (1949 in St. John's) attributed to a gravestone. Since she was in Brooklyn, not St. John's, when she died, and since she was dead already when Mom visited New York in the late 1930s, this was clearly a mistake and has been corrected by the information in the family bible.

I'm following up on our shared cousin George Meier and his maternal grandparents Elspeth Wheeler and Jacob Abbott. After you shared that you thought Elsie's death in 1928 may have been caused by a home abortion, I ordered a copy of her death certificate. Her cause of death surprised me and is listed as: "Manic Insanity, Terminal Exhaustion." She was hospitalized on May 9 and died on May 17, 1928, in Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, which had an extensive psychiatric ward (and still does today).
