AYRE, ANTHONY GREEN (1916- ). Farmer; soldier; businessman. Bom St. John's. Son of James Garfield and Carlotta P. (nee Glassey) Green. (His stepfather was Hon. CP. Ayre qv). Educated Holloway School and Prince of Wales College, St. John's; Caldecot Preparatory and Leys Public Schools, England; McGill University, Montreal. Soon after completing his education at McGill, Ayre moved back to St. John's where he began a dairy farm in 1937 and became one of the first farmers in Newfoundland to produce cottage cheese. He continued to operate his farm until the outbreak of World War II, when he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in the Atlantic and Pacific from 1941 to 1945. Following the war he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and became the Commanding Officer of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Naval Training Division.
In 1950 he became Chief of Naval Staff in Newfoundland and continued in that post until 1952. From then untill 1955 he served as area officer of the Sea Cadets of Newfoundland. During the late 1950s Ayre became interested in business affairs and in 1959 became the executive manager of the Newfoundland Board of Trade. He remained in that post until 1970, when he became General Manager of the St. John's Board of Trade qv. In 1971 he founded Anthony G. Ayre Associates, a public relations firm which he continued to direct in 1980. Since 1965 Ayre has also been the consul for Belgium and the Netherlands in Newfoundland.
Among other positions, Ayre was Secretary of the St. John's Shipping Association Limited from 1959 to 1978, and Executive Secretary of the Newfoundland Real Estate Board from 1973 to 1975; he has also served as director of the John Howard Society, as a member of the Newfoundland Labour Relations Board, and as Chairman of the Public Libraries Board of Newfoundland. Ayre is also a writer, freelance broadcaster and member of ACTRA. Awarded OBE, 1976. A.G. AYRE, HON. CHARLES PASCOE (1861-1937). Businessman; politician. Bom St. John's. Son of Mary and Charles R. Ayre qv. Married Diana Stevenson; Carlotta P. {nee Glassey) Green. C.P. Ayre entered the business world in 1889 when he became a director of his father's firm, Ayre and Sons. In 1932 he became Chairman of the Board of that company. While he directed his company Ayre became active in public affairs and served as a member of the St. John's Commission of Govemment from 1914 to 1921 and as a member of the Legislative Council from 1925 to 1934. Ayre also served as Chairman of the Board of Govemors of the Methodist College (later Prince of Wales College qv) and, as well, donated to the United Church in St. John's a field to be used as a play ground and a building to be used as an orphanage. AYRE, CHARLES ROBERT (1819-1889). Businessman; politician. Bom Exeter. Ayre arrived in Newfoundland in 1832 to work in the business of Benjamin Bowring qv in St. John's. Later he left the Bowring Company to establish a business with John Steer, the resulting partnership lasting until 1858. One year later he opened a store on Water Street with a second partner, Alexander Marshall. When the latter Charles R. Ayre resigned in 1884 Ayre engaged three of his sons to enter into business with him, thus creating Ayre and Sons, the forerunner of the modem-day Ayre Group of Companies qv, which is owned and operated by his descendents. As well, Ayre served as a Member of the House of Assembly for the District of Burin from 1873 to 1878, as a member of the Executive Council in Robert Thorburn's qv administration of 1885 to 1888, and as Member ofthe Legislative Council from 1979 to Ayre's death in 1889. Active in the Methodist Church as well, Ayre is remembered also for having donated $15,000 toward the building of a Methodist orphanage in St. John's. H.Y. Mott (1894), A.B. Perlin (1958?), D.W.
