Robert Joseph Tilley - (November 1, 1948 - December 21, 2025) - Robert passed peacefully in his sleep on the winter solstice, December 21st, 2025, at Pleasantview Towers in his hometown of St. John's, Newfoundland. He was 77 years old.
He is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mary (Battcock) Tilley, his youngest sister, Anne (Tilley) Keating, and his parents-in-law, Francis and Monica Fleming and brother-in-law Thomas Kean. Leaving to mourn his wife of fifty-one years, Brenda (Fleming) Tilley, his children, Sara Tilley (Andrea McGuire) and Bobby Tilley (Alexandria Dwyer), grandchildren Finnigan and Eloise Dwyer-Tilley, siblings Catherine Parsons Power (David), Patricia Tilley, Susan Tilley, and Greg Tilley (Wendy Tilley), along with their families. Also leaving to mourn are sisters-in-law, Roberta Drover (Aiden), and Linda Kean and their families, as well as a large circle of friends.
Robert (known to some as 'Alice') was a true original. A larger-than-life presence, "they broke the mould when they made him," as he himself might have said. Robert delighted in new sights, new experiences, and\emdash most of all\emdash in meeting new people. Born with the gift of gab, he was a natural storyteller and delighted in making people laugh. His main comedic forms were lengthy personal anecdotes (with punchlines!), puns, rhymes, physical comedy and absurdist flights of fancy.
Robert had a deep curiosity about the world. In his youth, he travelled and worked in South America and Europe, which became a favourite storytelling topic for the rest of his life. He met his wife Brenda while studying education at Memorial University in St. John's, and the pair taught together in Red Sucker Lake, Manitoba, Nain, Labrador, Sanikiluaq, Nunavut and Aklavik, Northwest Territories before settling back in St. John's. Robert held a number of other interesting jobs during his life as well. He ran a small composting business, had a brief stint as a forklift operator, worked in adult education, and\emdash in his later years\emdash even posed as a photographer's model. Robert was also a carpenter who was always building or fixing something. He built his own boat, which he fished from for a time. But none of his projects filled him with more pride than the family home he built in Brigus South, Newfoundland, which was undoubtedly Robert's favourite place on earth.
Robert believed in making the most of his time on the planet. As he often said, "A change is as good as a rest." He rarely sat still (unless he was napping on the couch), and loved to go out on the water or up in the woods. A steadfast supporter of the arts, he was especially fond of visual art, often attending openings in St. John's where he'd chat up a storm. He had a naturally creative and eccentric spirit, and tried his hand at clay sculpture, soapstone carving, photography and even poetry over the years\emdash just for the fun of it. A big-hearted man, Robert showed his love by teasing, telling jokes, and offering to fix things for people. He was a loyal friend who loved to visit anyone who might need cheering up. Even in his last days, he was making jokes and carrying on, his spirit as lively and impish as ever. He will be remembered with affection and gratitude by his family and circle of friends.
Visitation will be held at Barrett's Funeral Home, Hamilton Avenue, St. John's, on December 29, 2025, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. There will be no service at this time, but the family plans to return Robert's ashes to rest in his favourite place, Brigus South, this coming summer.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
