Notes
General:
10 June 2022 from Steve Barnable:

Lizzy, Henry's wife's parents died young and she was sent to New York to be raised but wound up coming back. She was raised as their own, by an uncle and aunt who were Sullivan's, but wasn't formally adopted. I think that because of this she got nothing and there were some hard feelings about it.

I know that Henry and Lizzy lived in Calvert when first married before coming over to the Barnable/Bryan land. They actually built on the site of the old Bryan house across the street from Philomena and Tommy's (formerly Morry house).

Maybe the house they were living in, in Calvert was Sullivans and they were told to get out…I am into pure speculation here. Will check some correspondence with Valerie Sullivan as she knew more about Lizzy's early background.

14 June 2022 from Kevin Reddigan:

Richard (Rich) Sullivan was married to Mary Alice Power but they had no biological children. However, over the years they 'adopted' two girls namely Bridget Josephine Meaney and Elizabeth Whalen.

Now the origin of and reason for the adoption of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Whelan (b. at Calvert in 1914) is pretty straightforward. She was the daughter of Rich Sullivan's sister, Mary-Ellen (Sullivan) Whelan, who died in 1918. Subsequently, Rich and Mary Alice took her in and raised her in their household. However, they had already 'adopted' another girl, Bridget Josephine 'Josie' Meaney who was born at St. John's in 1903. This adoption was a mystery to me and I didn't solve how Josie fitted into the picture until last year. Since she had the same birthname as my paternal grandmother, Bridget Joseph (Meaney) Reddigan, I always suspected that there had to be some connection but initially I couldn't determine their kinship, if any. Last year I had an e-mail from an gentleman in the USA who informed me of the names of Josie's parents. Through research, I determined that Josie's grandfather was James Meaney, from Ferryland, though married at St. John's he and his family had lived at Ferryland until about 1871, when he and his family moved to St. John's. He settled in the west end in the area that eventually became known as Kilbride. After gathering bits and pieces, my conclusion was that this James Meaney (b. abt. 1828) was the first cousin of Thomas Meaney, my g'g'grandfather, who was born at Stone Island about 1843. Both of the adopted 'daughters', Josie and Elizabeth are recorded at Caplin Bay in the 1921 Newfoundland Census. Josie was incorrectly shown as being born at Caplin Bay - an error that threw me off track for many years. Both Josie and Lizzie eventually went to the USA accompanied by their adoptive mother, Mary Alice Sullivan. Josie stayed in the USA and was married there to James Long of Keels, Bonavista Bay. As stated in Steve's information, Lizzie eventually came back to Calvert.

140622 More from Steve and his mother:

Kevin that is amazing detail and yes you are correct the Songhouse wasn't the right one. So, I spoke to Mother and she said the following:

Lizzie (Whalen) was never formally adopted by the Sullivan's, but was raised as theirs. She went to the States at around 6 and returned at approx 13. Mother said Lizzie's "father" ran rides at Coney Island. After their death, Lizzie was cut out and the Sullivan's claimed the land, house, etc. These were her cousins, etc. and this was an old Sullivan home. Her "father" was as you note, Rich. Apparently, there actually was a court case in St. John's and Henry and Lizzie won. They lived in the old Sullivan house in Calvert and both Bernice and Sheila were born there. The old house in Calvert was at some point torn down and the wood was brought to the north side of Ferryland, where they built on the site of William Bryan's house (Henry's grandmother was a Bryan). This house still stands across the street from Bernard Kavanagh's Million Dollar view in what I call the Barnable "enclave"…hey why not…if the Kennedy's can say it.

Anyway mother told me a story of my father at 13 having to rush up the harbour to get something urgent for Bernice as an infant and then walk to the northside of Calvert. Apparently Henry brought him by boatfrom the northside to where the river enters to save him time in the way back.

I told mother about them being in our old house, Jim Barnable's (actually, he was Henry "James" Barnable) and my gm Gertrude…or as everyone said it, "Jert", ha!

Anyway, this is just from mother's memory but like anything anecdotal, it might "ping" off something that Kevin might know.
