BARNABLE Catherine Alias Dec 10, 1884 12-Dec 1884 Richard Barnable Margaret Lovett John Keefe Esther Barnable

101109 from Uncle Howard: PETER BARNABLE HAD A SISTER CALLED KATE WHO MARRIED JIMMY WALSH [GROVES]. SHE USED TO EAT THE ALTER RAILS EVERY MORNING AND THEN SPEND THE REST OF THE DAY BACK BITING HER NEIGHBOURS. HER HUSBAND'S NICK NAME WAS [ WELDY]. RUMOUR HAS IT [MY SISTER PHYLLIS TOLD ME] [THIS HAPPENED IN HER TIME] SHE HAD A DAUGHTER WHO GOT PREGNANT [WASN'T MARRIED]. TO COVER UP, WHERE SHE WAS SUCH A CHURCH GOER IT COULDN'T HAPPEN TO HER DAUGHTER, SHE BOUND HER BELLY UP SO TIGHT THAT IT KILLED THE BABY BEFORE FULL TERM. THE BABY DIED INSIDE OF HER AND OF COURSE THE POISON WENT THRU HER SYSTEM AND SHE DIED. IT WAS COVERED UP FOR A WHILE BUT IT LEAKED OUT AFTER. THEY HAD A BIG FLOOD ABOUT 60 YEARS AGO DOWN IN THE GROVES. IT HAD BEEN RAINING A LONG TIME AND THE WATER BUILT UP BEHIND THE RAILWAY TRACK [DAD KNEW IT WAS COMING AND WARNED THE PEOPLE ABOUT THE BUILD UP OF WATER] THAT NIGHT SHE BROKE LOOSE AND TOOK THEIR BARN OUT IN CALVERT BAY DROWNING THEIR COWS, SHEEP AND HORSE. THEIR HOUSE SHIFTED AND MRS BARNABLE GOT WASHED OUT OF IT, WENT DOWN THE RIVER AND THERE WAS ONE POST LEFT IN THEIR GARDEN WITH A NAIL STICKING OUT HER DRESS HOOKED IN IT AND SHE WAS SAVED. SHE WAS HOME ALONE AT THE TIME. THE MEN WERE OUT SOME WHERE.
Medical:
Winter-Spring 1959 was a desperate year for Influenza in Newfoundland and she may have actually died of this. 1678
