250421:
Gloria Bruce and I have debated at length where or not the wife of Philip Field was Mary Jane Wheeler, daughter of James Richard Wheeler and Jane (?) his wife. I had accepted this as probable despite the absence of a marriage record to support it until yesterday when Gloria came upon a marriage record for Mary Jane Wheeler to Richard Cook(e) further supported by death records for the two of them. So I disconnected Mary Jane Wheeler from Philip Field and connected her to this "new" person in my family tree. But that has left Philip without a mother for his two children, whose mother in their birth-baptismal records is shown only as "Jane".
We now suspect that the real wife of Philip Field is Lucy Jane Wheeler, daughter of Philip Wheeler and Hannah Murrin/Murren/Murrain. The ages are comparable and these two families were extremely close in location (Torbay Rd) and multiple intermarriages.
So, for now at least, I am going to make this connection pending some evidence to either support this theory or destroy it.

Gloria Dawe Bruce posted the image from the register on Newfoundlanders and Genealogy Facebook today. Her notes suggeste that the marriage was actually performed at the Anglican Church in Quidi Vidi (Christ Church). I had never thought that this was where it took place so asked for clarification. Neither bride nor groom were from Quidi Vidi.

170711 from Gloria Bruce: "My source of interest is Margaret Wheeler who was born May 11, 1818 and she married Job Daw at the Anglican Cathedral in St. John's on 20 Sep 1838 but lived and had all their children in Greenspond, Bonavista Bay. I have searched everywhere to find her date of death and have had no luck at all. Job and Margaret had 12 children together in their 26 year marriage. He died in May 1864 only two years after Emily, their last child was born... or else they may have had more. ;o) Of those 12 children I have only found one who died in infancy.... I think that was uncommon for those times.... they did indeed have a big family. ;o)"
"I have found Job's headstone at the Anglican Cemetery in Greenspond and that of some of their sons and their sons children but have had no luck with Margaret. I live in hope though.. unless she left Greenspond to live with one of their daughters and died while living with them she should be buried there. Several of her daughters left the Island and went to the UK and the US to live and I have to wonder if she might not have followed after Job died. She was only 46 when he died, left with a lot of kids ... she may have remarried... but I have yet to find anything on that either.... Margaret is my ONE big mystery. I do have several... as I am sure everyone does.... but she has been one that I keep coming back to... I really need to put her to "Rest"... ;o)"

051112 from Gloria Dawe Bruce:
I forgot to tell you that I recently found out the date of death for Margaret (Wheeler) DAW. After we came back from Greenspond this summer and I had no luck in locating a headstone (for the 4th time searching) of my Great Great grandmother Margaret Daw at St. Stephen's Anglican Cemetery there, I put in a few calls to several of the parishes around the Greenspond area in hopes of locating death records. After about 6 calls I finally found the parish in Indian Bay who had old burial records for Greenspond... I spoke to Rev. Coffin and he agreed to do a search for me. He got back to me in October, with the good news. I am just so thrilled to have finally found her date of death... after all these years of looking for her.... she has finally been found and so now I can put her to rest.. ;o)
DEATH: Ref: Indian Bay Parish Records..... information from Rev. David Coffin. Oct 11, 2012
Please be informed that the records for the Anglican Parish of Greenspond indicate that a Margeret Dawe died Aprill 25, 1891 and was interred in Greenspond April 28, 1891. The spelling of her name, as recorded in the burial register is as I have spelled it in this email. May the souls of the faithful by the mercy of God rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine upon them.

I found out about this marriage from the church records. Mom was not aware of it. She always knew this person as Miriam, or more often Mims, never Maria. And she only knew of her marriage to a man named Steeves from Hillsborough. She was unaware of this prior, presumably very brief, marriage. I don't know whether the marriage ended in divorce or if the seaman died or whatever but he obviously was quickly and deliberately forgotten and omitted from family oral tradition for whatever reason.
140318:
Just discovered a will to which he (or a man by the same name) was a witness dated Nov. 13, 1909. By then Marion was married to McCoubrey in NB so it appears she must have divorced her first husband or the marriage was annulled. There is no record of this available unfortunately.Marriage Events
Alt. Marriage: 15 Oct 1907.

Their wedding register gives their names as Edward McCoubrey (not Edwin, and without the second name) and Marion Wheeler (not Maria and it is not given as a second name either). In addition it is notable that she is shown as a spinster. So either the first marriage was annulled or she did not admit to it and hence was a bigamist.
010725:
Her religion was given as Methodist but this was probably just assumed since she married a Methodist before a Methodist minister.

14/12/02: The only information I had on this person was from Mom's memory and not reliable. I found the information on birth and first marriage of Maria Wheeler on the Nfld. GenWeb site and believe this is the same person as Mom's "Miriam". Should check the original records to be sure of the correct name.
111009: I'm of two minds whether to accept the dates of birth, marriage and death for family members found in the family bible. There seem to be many discrepancies, if not outright errors. In this case there is a year in the difference so I am leaving the church record as the "official" birth date for now.
130114 from transcript of St. Thomas register on NGB website:
Maria WHEELERJoseph & Mary Hannah GOSSE b June 20 1886 Outer Cove Road bap Aug 8 1886 laborer
120318: I was partly right to question Mom's memory. She did have the forename more or less correct. It shows as being Marion Maria, not Miriam, as Mom remembered it, in a website I found today covering her marriage and descendants in New Brunswick (McCoubrey website operated by Pete MacCoubrey [sic] on MyHeritage). I found this connection as a result of a relatively close DNA match between Glen and a person named Valerie Cormier, also on MyHeritage. They share 72.0 cM, which I had formerly not considered a significant enough shared portion to be bothered following up. But when I checked her family tree on MyHeritage and discovered the names Wheeler and McCoubrey I knew there was a good chance of a connection.
What Mom got confused was the name of her aunt's husband. He was not a Steeves as she thought; he was a McCoubrey. and one of their daughters married a Steeves, so that was what confused Mom.
I am correcting the mistake on her name and her husband's name today and adding some of the family details beneath them from the MyHeritage family trees that relate to them.
150318:
The one thing I still find troubling and confusing is the first marriage of Maria Wheeler to John Joseph Aylward. This is how I transcribed that marriage event from the St. Thomas register at the Provincial Archives some years ago:
June 23, 1906, St. Thomas's, John Joseph Aylward, 21, bachelor, Seaman, Princes St., Joseph Aylward, Cook, and Maria Wheeler, 18 Spinster, ___, Signal Hill, Joseph Wheeler, Turnkey, by G. R. Madden, Edward Pearce, Statia Aylward, No. 125
Note that in this version, as opposed to the briefer transcript in the DPHW "Vital Records", the name and occupation of the fathers is given. Without this I would not have been as certain that this is the same Maria Wheeler because there is no record of this marriage or its termination in the family bible. I have to assume that the marriage was not one that the family wanted to recall for one reason or another.

Here is a response that I received to a message sent on Ancestry where I found a huge Steeves family tree in which Marion and Edward appeared (It was sent to Kevin Reddigan since I was using his Ancestry account at the time):
SteevesFamilyInc
Marion Wheeler and Ed McCoubrey
Hi Kevin, Thank you for contacting us. I apologize for the delay in getting back you. So much has been going on this winter that emails and Ancestry messages have gotten backlogged. Please forgive my late reply. We don't currently share our tree for two reasons: 1) there are an unknown number of errors in it - it was created from sometimes incorrect information that had been researched and compiled by Esther Clark Wright in 1967; was then expanded upon over the decades through further research, first-hand input, second-hand info, etc.; and we then inherited it in 2012 'as-is' with very few citations/sources - so we don't want to spread incorrect information; and 2) the genealogy is actually owned by the Steeves Family Inc. (the first family in Canada (and maybe North America) to incorporate as a legal entity) and they thus have the rights to it, so we cannot distribute/share it in full. However, I can provide you with information. Marion Myrah Wheeler (1886-1961) was married to Edward Alexander McCoubrey Jr. (1881-1955), and they had children: Flora "Flo" Minnie McCoubrey (1908-2005) Irene Mae McCoubrey (1909-1985) Elsie Rhoda McCoubrey (1911-1997) Alice Mary McCoubrey (1915-2011) James Edward McCoubrey (1916-1985) Vera McCoubrey (1918-1999) Laura Esther McCoubrey (1920-1945) Norman Albert McCoubrey (1921-1996) Helen Pearl Louise McCoubrey (1925-?) If you would like family group sheets for each of Ed and Marion's children, please provide your email address. We don't have information on her first husband, but we don't need it since we focus on Steeves Family descendants (which doesn't include Marion Wheeler and Ed McCoubrey). We have Marion and Ed in our tree because some of their children married Steeves descendants (hopefully the connections below make some sense to you, I can send more detailed charts that show just how each of the men (and one woman) below are descended from Heinrich and Regina Stieff, if you provide your email address): Flora m.
