Notes

290908:

A transcript of a record in a notebook believed to have been given to Jean Morry Funkhouser by Howard Morry. The entries appear to be transcribed from family-related gravestones but the hand is not that of Howard Morry so it is unclear who wrote these records but it is believed to be either of his two aunts Jane or Frances [NB: Nimshi Crewe records that these notes were made by Jane Morry Gray, Dad Morry's Aunt Josey]:

"Sacred to the memory of William Oxenham, who died 9 Jan. 1805, Aged 75 years. Also Mary his daughter who died 2 Jan. 1832 Aged 76 years. Also Thomasine Dunsterville, the dearly beloved wife of Mr. James H. Carter, who departed this life on 12 Septr. 1835 Aged 40 years."

It was later learned from Jean Carter Stirling, who supplied a photo of the memorial that it is on the wall inside St. Saviour's Church in Dartmouth

Email from Enid O'Brien:

Dunsterville is given as Dunstable in her death certificate but Dunsterville on marriage and birth certificate. Her name is given as Thomasine on all the records and not Thomasina. Pyne is the surname.

Marriage certificate as follows: Ref. Dartmouth, St. Saviours in theCounty of Devon in the year 1828, James Howe Carter of this parish and Thomasine Dunsterville Pyne of the parish of St. Pedrock married in this church by licence (both of age) on the 5th day of February in the year one thousand, eight hundred and twenty eight by me Robert Holdsworth, Vicar. 041006: Carter Family Tree notes they had 1 son and 2 daughters but doesn't name them.

051206: Email from Enid O'Brien gives the following gravestone transcript taken down by Mrs. Gray in the 1930s: "William Oxenham died 1805, age 75 years Also Mary, his daughter died 1832, age 76 years Also Thomasine Dunstervill, the wife of James H. Carter died 1835, age 40 years."

This adds the enticing possibility that Mary was more than just the witness at the wedding of Thomasine but may also have been her sister, if Thomasine's surname was only Pyne by a marriage previous to the one to James Howe Carter. I am investigating this possibility further.

"I have spent a bit of time researching Sir. Henry Pynn recently the first Newfoundlander ever Knighted. He served with the Duke of Wellington in the Penninsular Campaign and was knighted in 1815. He died in London in April 25, 1855 and was buried at Kensal Green All Souls' Cemetery, London England on May 3, 1855. His wife Lady Cecilia Pynn died 24 Dec 1849. I came across this sad but interesting article on Lady Pynn in The Weekly Herald from February 06, 1850 and thought it might be of interest to some."
