I downloaded the marriage record of this couple from the RootsIreland.ie website today (a pay as you go site) in hopes that it would have the full names of their parents. It did not. The possibility exists however that these names are given on the original church record and not transcribed by this website as I have seen such omissions before on data that they sell.

I was able to download an image and a transcript of the church register today from FMP. It does not give the names of the parents. The transcript gave the date of marriage as 26 January 1856 but a careful look at the image of the register shows this was an error in the transcript and it was in fact January 20, 1856. I reported this to FMP and upon review they agreed with me and corrected the transcript.

General:

The spelling of Daniel Hough's (Howe) last name is corrupted or spelt differently in different records. This was very common for this surname. In Australia, where many of the descendents now live, they are all known as Howe according to Jamie who has visited several of them. Strangely enough, the Whelans who emigrated to Australia at the same time had their names changed to Phelan! (Source: letter to Jamie from her Auntie Elizabeth dated 11 Sept 1991).

Notes from David Stevens:

From Modreeny when married. Immigrated to Australia c1857. Returned to Ireland with family (2 children) in 1863, via Suez Canal (to Cloughjordan in Tipperary). Some records show surname as PHELAN.

Is she the Eliza HOWE who is a sponsor for Thomas Peter PHELAN (son of James and Julia) in Bendigo in 1861.

Sponsor at baptism of Mary PHELAN (daughter of Dan and Jane) Cloughjordan 17 April 1864.

Daughter Brigid QUINLISK of Loughane present when Eliza died.

I wrote to David Stevens seeking clarification of the sources for his information concerning the names of Jamies Great Grandmother and 2nd Great Grandmother as well as the location of their burials. This is what he wrote back:

"Hi Christopher

Unfortunately I don't have references for all my data but will try and answer your questions.

Catherine (McLoughlin) Whelan was still alive in 1851 and lived in Modreeny (Griffith's Valuation). I believe she was buried in Modreeny. Mother's maiden name possibly Ely and they lived on Eminiska Townland.

Elizabeth (Whelan) Hough died 27 July 1903 at Knocknachree, Kilruane and is also buried in Modreeny. Husband, died 1912, also buried in Modreeny.

We visited Grawn churchyard and couldn't identify and relevant headstones. Part of the church was still standing.

We tried to contact the C of I minister at Modreeny but received no response.

Obviously, without sources for his information, this all remains pretty speculative. However, it doses seem likely that he obtained this information from Liz Whelan. It turns out she is Pat Hough of Lorrha's niece and if she obtained her information from her uncle it is more than likely correct. So I will write to her for confirmation.
