I had originally thought that his name was John because I seem to recall that was the name written on the back of the photo I digitised at PJ Quinlisks. But I realised when I entered the information from David Stevens that he had no son in this family named John and moreover his Jim Howe was married to a woman named Julia Kennedy and they had two sons named Jim and Pat, all information I had from Auntie Elizabeth. To clinch it, she had referred to him as Jim, not John, so I am certain that I either copied the information on the back of the photo incorrectly or it was labelled incorrectly. Therefore I am merging this John with Jim today.

Went to Ireland with parents 1862/1863, returned to Australia c1886 where he arrived in Adelaide; then went to his cousins in New South Wales and finally lived at Lake Cooper with his Uncle Martin WHELAN at Corop. Some of his grandchildren still live in the area (per Jim PHELAN August 1990) - Adrian & Mary SEXTON, 9 Naranghi Drive, Bendigo, Victoria 3550.

James Howe was the son of Daniel Howe and Elizabeth Howe nee Phelan. James had been born in Bendigo but as the story goes Daniel's father in Ireland died and Daniel inherited the family farm there and the family went back to Ireland. In 1885 James sold his horse to pay for his passage to Victoria and left London on the Orient Line steamship of 3720 Tons the RMS Austral under command of the ships master Alfred Charlton and arrived in Melbourne on 25/5/1885. The ships Passenger List gives James occupation as a Farmer and his age as 25.
James most likely went to his Uncle Martin Phelan's farm at Lake Cooper near Corop Vic. James married Julia Kennedy (143) on 29/9/1891 at the Sacred Heart Church Cornella Vic. The couple had seven children Daniel Michael B1891, Daniel Michael B1892, John Joseph B1894, James B1895, Elizabeth Ann B27/1/1898, Julia Veronica (Vera) B1901 and Patrick Leo B1903. In the 1934 and 1937 Electoral Rolls James is shown as living at Moora Rd Rushworth Vic with his wife Julia (143) and his occupation is given as a carpenter. James and Julia moved to Bendigo as they were older to the Benevolent Home. James died in Bendigo Vic and is buried in the Rushworth Cemetery Vic.
