AGRIESTI, DOROTHY GERTRUDE (nee Barnable) - March 5, 1930 - March 28, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a very special Wife, Mother and Grandmother, Dorothy Agriesti (nee Barnable), age 82 years at the Hoyles/Escasoni Complex. Predeceased by her parents, James and Gertrude Barnable, her sisters Philomena (Tommy Grant), Sister Dorothea Barnable, Sarah (Ron Roche) and Mary (Richard McGrath), her brothers Matt (Margaret), Henry (Elizabeth), Joe (Jean), Herb (Teresa) and Jack. Left to mourn and cherish her life are her loving husband Bernard Agriesti of Ferryland, her sons Mark (Sherry) and Blaine, her loving daughter Luanne (Kevin Cleary) who was always there for her, her grandchildren Clinton and John Agriesti (and their mother, Carolyn Hawkins), Olivia and Genna Cleary and Jeffrey and Renee Agriesti, her brother Stan Barnable (Frances), her sister-in-law Margaret Barnable (Jack) and a large circle of nieces, nephews and their families, and many friends. The youngest of eleven children, at the age of eleven she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. She spent most of the next 15 years in the Sanitorium in St. John's fighting this disease. Despite having been anointed on several occasions and being given a slim chance of surviving, her willpower and determination won the battle. She was told by her doctors that her chances of successfully bearing children were also slim and she went on to give birth to three babies - 8, 11 and 12 pounds. She was a very talented artist and loved to draw, paint, read, write poetry and songs, and play the piano. She had a passion for learning and preserving the history and genealogy of Ferryland and the Southern Shore and became a valuable resource to anyone doing research on the area. She immersed herself in the things she loved and she went out of her way to help people in whatever way she could. She was a very dignified, deep and caring person, a woman of many talents and she touched the lives of so many people. A special thank you goes out to the staff of the 3rd Floor West, Escasoni Complex for the wonderful care given to our mother over the past six months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Church (Ferryland) Restoration Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 195, Ferryland, NL, AOA 2HO. Resting peacefully at Fahey's Funeral Home, Fermeuse. Visitation on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 30 - April 1, 2:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial on Monday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m. from Holy Trinity Church, Ferryland. Interment to follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Ferryland. To express condolences on-line please visit www.faheysfuneralhome.ca <http://www.faheysfuneralhome.ca>.

Eileen leaves behind her many colleagues at Memorial University of Newfoundland where she was a dedicated employee for nearly 40 years. Eileen's love for God and her church was very admirable, and she will be missed by her many friends in her parish.

Eileen's life was a testament to the beautiful, gentle, and most generous person she was. She never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or just an email to let you know she was thinking of you. Eileen left her heart in Knockbrack, County Kerry, Ireland, Kelligrews, Newfoundland and New York City. Her spirit will live on in these places forever. Eileen will be profoundly missed, but the memories she created will be a source of solace and inspiration to those of us who were lucky enough to have crossed paths with her.

An Irish Blessing

May love and laughter light your days

And warm your heart and home.

May good and faithful friends be yours

Wherever you may roam.

May peace and plenty bless your world

With joy that long endures.

May all life's passing seasons

Bring the best to you and yours.

From Steve Barnable on Facebook Messenger 150524:

We just had my cousin Eileen pass on Friday. I am heading to Ferryland for her burial. Very sad. She never married. She was the most Barnable of all of us. Her father had both parents Barnables…and proudly an Irish citizen. She was very close to us. I visited her in NY when young and when she came back to NL we went to school together in CBS. She worked with my father and myself at the Pyrophillite mine and later was a secretary at MUN. She died at her desk and they ran to get Guy who worked in the same building. They would have coffee together…she was his son Felix's godmother. Sweetest kindest person you'd meet.

Notes

191214:

The birth date given by Wanda (Oct. 1841) is clearly incorrect as it would make her son Mattew's birth fall after she was 45. Also, if is a decade earlier than the birth dates of her siblings. I am inclined to think that it should be Oct. 1851 and I am putting that in as a guesstimate today.
