I only know of this person's existence because of his name appearing on a Land Grant No. 659 in 1847 to the lands that the Devereaux family still occupies today. I don't know if he is a son or a brother to Michael, whom we assume to be the earliest Devereaux in Ferryland.
151019:
Enid raised his parentage again in an email today to Rick Morry. She at first thought he was the son of John Devereaux and Catherine Keefe but later realised that the John Devereaux-Catherine Keefe marriage occurred far too late to be his parents and she now speculates this was a second marriage for his father and that his mother was John's first wife, Elizabeth Kehoe. But there is no baptismal record to support this supposition.
Here is his obituary from the NGB website:
January 16, 1926 in the Evening Telegram
Obituary - The news of the passing of James DEVEREAUX, a most respected resident of Ferryland, was conveyed in a message received by the telegram yesterday evening. Mr. Devereaux passed away yesterday morning in his 75th year. A fisherman planter, he carried on a most successful business and for years was a dealer at Goodridges's. Two daughters, Mrs. Costello of Ferryland, and Mrs. Keough of Colinet survive, two sons, one of whom Thomas, was a priest, predeceased him. Rev. Thomas Devereaux, it will be remembered passed away during the flu epidemic in 1917. The late Mr. Devereaux was twice married and his second wife survives him. The funeral takes place at Ferryland tomorrow, Sunday. Owing to the snow blockade it is impossible for friends in the city to attend, although both members for the district will make the effort, probably going by boat.

200114:
In an email response to Rick Morry concerning the scattered pieces of information he had associating a family of Devereauxs in BC with his Morrys Enid O'Brien resonded and tied the whole thing together nicely:
Hi Rick/Chris,
Thank you for sending a copy of the pictures and the info on the Devereaux family. As a matter of fact it did help me a little. With it I could confirm a brother of Mary Devereaux Morry.
As you stated William Devereaux who married in Esquimalt, BC, was first cousin to George William Morry and that in turn would make him first cousin to Esther Graham Morry Carew, sister of George Wm Morry. In order for them to be first cousins William Devereaux's father and Mary Devereaux Morry (mother of George and Esther) would have to be sister and brother. William was a bachelor when he married on 26 Dec 1899 to Mary Gyllis who was a widow, born in NL to Roderick and Catherine Gyllis (this is spelled Gyllis on William's Marriage registration but Gillis on the registration of marriage of their son, John Hugh Devereaux). I am familiar with this name and it is spelled Gillis in Newfoundland. Mary's first husband was a Mr. Hall (Ref. Wm Devereaux/Mary Gyllis wedding registration). The retirement picture of William, Jr, that you sent would be their son, brother of John Hugh Devereaux.
The great thing about William Devereaux's marriage registration is that it lists his father as John Devereaux and his mother as Elizabeth Kiho. Kiho is spelled wrong but it is found in the records as Keough and Kehoe. So we are able to say that Mary Devereaux Morry (b. 1831) and John Devereaux (b. ?) are brother and sister.
In the Renews RC Records I found Bap 25/2/1858 Mary of John Devereaux/Eliza Kehoe Sps James Culliton/Catherine Kehoe. As Catherine Kehoe is a sponsor to Mary's birth it could possibly be that she is sister to John and therefore another sister to Mary Devereaux Morry and John Devereaux. Of course we can't say this definitely but it might be worth making a note of it.
Thank you for sending the page of pictures. I wonder if you might write me the names of the ladies on the upper left hand side because I can read them.
I recognize Margaret called "Retta" Carew because I have pictures of her. She went to the US for nurses training. Margaret married X3 and lived in California until her death. I am in contact with her grand daughter Carol Hutchinson although I have never met her. I think your family must be very religious because I have a letter from your aunt Ellen (1963 year) stating that Retta "was very devout". Also, that "Mary Lynch kept Gus in the church and informed George he had the rosary mother had given him". This letter was sent to another cousin, Mary Ellen Yard Aylward in New York. Mary Ellen and her sister were in the convent at one time and Mary Ellen left, got married, and lived in New York.
As regards to the Devereaux this is the first time I have ever seen a picture of them.
Well, that is all for now and thanks for this.
Enid
060916:
The land grant found in the Media Gallery was to Michael, James and John Devereaux in 1847. I am assuming that this is three brothers and not the father, Michael, and two of his sons. In fact Michael Senior may have even been deceased at this time.
151019:
Rick, Enid and I are still struggling with this Devereaux family. It makes no matter to me as they are in no way related to my line but Rick is stubborn as they are his immmediate ancestors and Enid has gathered information on them over the years that may or may not be assigned to the correct Devereaux since they tended to use the same forenames repeatedly like many Irish families. Today in an email to Rick she brought up the fact that she had previously stated that John Devereaux and Catherine Keefe were the parents of James Devereaux but that she now realised that this was impossible because they did not marry until June 1, 1882 far too late to be the parents of James. She is now of the belief that this was a second marriage for John Devereaux and that James must have been a son by his first wife, Elizabeth Kehoe. I am making this change today but it is all very speculative as the parish records are missing to prove this.
