231206: Caption on back of photo of Jim Sexton in scrapbook reads:

"Dearest Ciss [NB this is Margaret Quinlisk]: Am sending you this photo of Jim in the Training College Football Group. I have put a mark on his knee, so you will know him. He is sittingnext the captain (of the team), who has the ball. Hope you will send some of yours soon. Love Lizzie"

There is another note added that says: "From Betty Sexton Yours sincerely Jim Howe"

And finally, another note on the bottom of the card reads: "Jim sent me this when I was away at school, so I am sending it on to you."

From this I deduce that Jamie's Auntie Elizabeth (also known as Lizzie or La) received this from Betty i.e. Elizabeth Howe Sexton, Jim's brother, and sent it on to Auntie Elizabeth's sister Ciss, who seems to have had an interest in the far flung parts of the Quinlisk family.

The Jim Howe in the photo is most likely Betty's brother but I don't know this for sure.

070217 from Anthony Ludington's Sexton Family History:

Elizabeth was the fourth child of James Howe (142) and Julia Howe (143) nee Kennedy. She went to school in Rushworth and was a boarder at St Marys College Tatura Vic where she was Dux of the School in 1914. In 1915 went to the Victorian Teachers College. At the end of 1916 she was posted to the small town of Murrabit West State School Vic on the banks of the Murray River 20 miles from Kerang. Elizabeth travelled to school each day in a Governors Cart pulled by Timmy the pony. She boarded the Flowerdale's who were quite well off and had a house right on the Murray River. Elizabeth said you could watch the paddle steamers from Mildura to Echuca coming past picking up and dropping of cargo along the river. It was in her words a beautiful sight at night when they came down the river with their lights on. The school had about 30 pupils in various grades and she was the only teacher. Her wages were two pound a week and board cost 16 Schillings a week. One of her main entertainments after school was playing the piano.
Elizabeth was at some stage transferred to the Muskerry Vic State School near Toolleen Vic. She was engaged to a young man Kevin Knight who died during serving in the Armed Forces during World War 1. She was then engaged to Councillor John Charles Vincent Sexton (48) who died in 1919 of the Spanish Influenza before they could be married.
Elizabeth must have met Walter Patrick Sexton (141) when she was engaged to John Charles Sexton (48). Elizabeth married Walter Patrick Sexton (144) on 25/5/1921 at St Mary's Catholic Church Rushworth Vic. The couple had 10 children John (Jack) Patrick (145) B9/5/1922, Frank (146) B14/12/1923, Gerard (147) B4/4/1925, Carmel Therese (182) B9/11/1926, Sheila (203) B22/11/1928, Patrick Thomas (220) 31/5/1930, Margaret Mary (244) B4/1/1932, Brian (258) 26/8/1934, Adrian Michael (259) B21/10/1936 and Judith Winifred (298) B10/7/1939.
Elizabeth was very involved with the Rushworth Catholic Church and taught Catechism to school children. Her funeral in Rushworth was one of the biggest I have seen. Elizabeth is buried in the Rushworth Vic Cemetery.

Email from Kevin Reddigan March 28, 2002, providing details on Morry deeds and land transactions reported in the Confederation Building forthe Southern District - 1825-1888:
"Vol. 3 - Folio 240 - July 1 1843 (246 pounds)
This is the deed for the sale of the Sweetland estate on the Downs at Ferryland. This sale was prompted by a judgment against the estate in the Supreme Court? William Sweetland of Bonavista, Magistrate, executor of the estate, sold his late parents' property, then occupied by John Jillard, to Elizabeth Carter, of Exeter, England, widow of Robert Carter."

Hi Chris:

Thank you for keeping me in "the loop". As you may or may not know,I have collected considerable info on the Carters of Ferryland. I knew, of course, that the Holdsworth family was associated with Newfoundland and the southern shore and as such would be business associates of the Carters and Morrys of that area. However, I didn't have any reason to believe that they were related. I did not research the Holdsworth family but I note the attached picture of Arthur Howe Holdsworth to your last e-mail and I am wondering if there is a connection through the Howe family.

Robert Carter (brother of Mary Carter md Daniel Saunders ) was married to Elizabeth Harris Howe (1768-1851). This would mean that Ann Saunders md Matthew Morry would be the niece of Robert Carter/Elizabeth Howe. Interestingly, when Robert Carter and Elizabeth Howe's son, James Howe Carter was married the ceremony was performed by Rev Robert "Holdsworth", Vicar. Mary Morry (md Arthur Kemp) is the sister of Matthew Morry md Ann Saunders, niece of Elizabeth (Howe) Carter.

So, there is a probable "loose" link with the Morrys/Carters/Holdsworth families which might explain why the Holdsworth property was sold to the Morrys.

Just thought I would put in my two cents.

Regards.

Enid"

040916:
In addition to the grant that Kevin informed me about above, there are a series of grants given to Elizabeth Howe Carter and her three adult children, Eliza Woolcombe, Robert Carter Jr. and James Carter, in 1848 which seem to relate more to a consolidation of properties previously claimed by her husband, the late Robert Carter Senior, but never properly conveyed, rather than actual new grants. In other words, these would most likely have been thought of as Carter lands from long before but were being made "legal" at this point after the death of Robert Carter Senior to prevent others from squatting and claiming the land as theirs. There are copies of some of these grants in the Media Gallery.

151016:
I just transcribed another SDC document (SDC Vol 3 Fol 240-243 William Sweetland to Elizabeth Carter 22-11-1843) which is a settlement of judgment of the Supreme Court in favour of Elizabeth Harris Howe Carter against the estate of Ann Carter, widow successively of Sam Hill, Henry Sweetland and Matthew Morry. Apparently, at the time of her death, Ann, or more likely Matthew, owed Robert Carter and/or his wife Elizabeth Harris Howe Carter several hundred pounds, and William Sweetland, as executor of his mother's estate, settled the debt by conveying to Elizabeth a certain parcel of land on the Downs. Ann had a great deal of land from various husbands as well as from her father, the first Robert Carter, so this would have been the simplest way to settle the debt, though heaven only knows what Elizabeth would have done with the land, since she was by then living in Exeter.
