I responded:
Dear Carol Roane:
I would not be much of a genealogist if I was not delighted to hear from someone who has information that may correct an error in my family tree! So I thank you for taking the time to make contact and I hope that the two of us can sort out this conflict together. I find it awkward to work through Ancestry (or any other service for that matter) as opposed to one-on-one contact. I wonder would you be willing to connect with me via email at cjmorry@ncf.ca. I have a marriage record for my 1st cousin, 5 times removed, Eliza Howe Carter, to a George Bulley and it is very likely I chose the wrong man of this name since I did not research him very thoroughly. If you can provide alternative information on a marriage of George Butler Bulley that conflicts with the marriage I have for the man simply known as George Bulley I will be better able to make any needed corrections. As it happens, on the marriage record I have there are no others of the name Bulley as witnesses and hence I may have erred in choosing George Butler Bulley as the likely candidate. I look forward to hearing more from you. Thanks once again. Christopher Morry

Hi again
I have had a search for Eliza's husband George but I am not finding anything about him.
I see she married again in 1820 so they were not married very long, I have looked for a death too but found nothing Sorry I can't be of help If I come across him in my searches I will let you know I am compiling a dedicated Bulley family tree and they are popping up all over the place so he might just turn up Best wishes Carol Roane

I replied:
Hello Carol Roane:
Well now I guess you know what I grasped at straws and assumed that the only available George had to be the guy. There just don't seem to be any logical alternatives.
My guess is that even though he shows up in the register as "of this parish" in reality he was a sojourner, probably a mariner, and possibly even from Newfoundland, where the name is not uncommon, though often seen as Bully there.
Anyway, I will keep hunting but in the meantime disconnect Eliza from your man at least offline and eventually online when next I do updates.
Please keep me in mind if anything turns up on the real George.
Cheers
Christopher

Will of Eliza Howe Woolcombe from Newfoundland will books volume 2 page 399 probate year 1860 In re Eliza Howe Woolcombe deceased. This is the last will and testament of me Eliza Howe Woolcombe widow of Captain John Charles Woolcombe R.N. made published and declared this 23rd day of Decr 1857 In the first place I direct all my just debts and funeral expences to be paid and as to all the rest residue and remainder of my personal estate goods chattels and effects of whatever nature and kind soever and wheresoever I give and bequeath unto my son William Walker Woollcombe his executors administrators and assigns to be absolutely at his disposal And I hereby nominate constitute and appoint him whole and sole executor of this my will. In witness whereof I have hereunto set and subscribed my hand and seal the day and year aforesaid- Eliza Howe Woollcombe (Seal)- Signed sealed published and declared by the said testator Eliza Howe Woollcombe in the presence of us- Emma Maria Sparshatt 1 Lower Southernhay Exeter- Elizabeth Carter 1 Lower Southernhay Exeter. Certified correct, D. M. Browning Registrar
240212: George LeMessurier's Carter family tree seems to imply there was a second son in this marriage but Eliza Howe [Carter] Wooldcombe's will makes no mention of him. I suspect that this was an error in the family tree or my interpretation of it. I am removing him from here today.
080615:
On the 1851 Census she was the head of the household as a widow and her household consisted of her aged mother and a niece, Elizabeth Carter and two servants. She claimed to be 57 but was in fact 66 at the time. Woman, thy name is vanity!
130615:
According to the BMD database compiled by Gert Crosbie and placed on CD by MHA, her death notice appeared in these newspapers in Newfoundland:
1) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807-
2) Courier (Morning Courier & General Advertiser, Morning Courier) 1844-1878
3) Times and General Commercial Gazette 1832-1895
4) Public Ledger 1820-1882 (issues available begin 1827)
5) Express (Newfoundland Express) 1851-1876
The text (most likely abbreviated by Gert) read:
Deceased was the widow of the late Capt. J.C. Woolcombe, R.N., and only sister of both James H. Carter and the late Robert Carter, Ferryland.
180616:
ON 6 Jan. 1965, Nimshi Crewe (in MG281 file at The Rooms) transcribes the account in The Times as follows:
"Died. At Exeter, Devon, on the 28th December last, Eliza Howe, widow of Captain J. C. Woolcombe, R.N., only sister of James H. and the late Robert Carter, Esq's of Ferryland, Newfoundland.
040916:
There are a series of grants given to Elizabeth Howe Carter and her three adult children, Eliza Woolcombe, Robert Carter Jr. and James Carter, in 1848 which seem to relate more to a consolidation of properties previously claimed by her husband, the late Robert Carter Senior, but never properly conveyed, rather than actual new grants. In other words, these would most likely have been thought of as Carter lands from long before but were being made "legal" at this point after the death of Robert Carter Senior to prevent others from squatting and claiming the land as theirs. There are copies of some of these grants in the Media Gallery.
170319:
Though there is no specific mention of her share of property in Ferryland in her will, there is a document in the ROD Southern District Court records conveying this property to her nephew, Sheriff James Howe Carter for a nominal sum (£29). The matter is being handled on her estate's behalf by William Rendeall, acting as her executor, in Newfoundland at least. There is no mention of her son and sole heir in this document, which is strange, because he survived until 1902, and presumably would have been the beneficiary of the funds realised from this conveyance.
William Rendell was married to Eliza's niece, Fanny Rendell Carter, and the documents were attested to by Frederick B. T. Carter, so it was all pretty much a family affair.

General:
111109 from NGB: Eliza Howe CARTERRobert & Sarah b Mar 8 1816 bap Sep 27 1818 Formerly of Dartmouth, County of Devon, England, now of Ferryland.
She was a spinster at the time of marriage so clearly other records of marriages of Eliza Howe Carter pertain to someone else, her aunt I believe.
070615:
Here is a letter transcribed by Jean Carter Stirling from Eliza Howe [Carter] Hoyles to her cousin Ada Augusta Dawson [Rendell] Durrant informing her of the recent death of Eliza's mother:
Robert and Sarah (Rendell) CARTER
Carbonear,Mar.17,1879
My dear Ada.
Your kind letter to your Aunt came too late for her to read as you will have learnt ere this reaches you, from your cousin George. My dear Mother passed away quietly and peacefully without any suffering and sensible to the last at so great an age -- eighty seven. The last of her family, only Aunt Rendell remains and she is very feeble now. No one can tell how much I miss my dear Mother. I am getting old myself, being two years older now than dear Mamma was when Papa died. She ever took a great interest in you and grieved so much as we all did when we heard that you had found the Mormons, but surely Ada, this cannot be true. I cannot fancy that the little child I loved so dearly has so forgotten her Bible and the early instructions she received. You were a little, very little older than your little cousins when your poor Mother died and I took charge of you. It is not likely we shall meet again on earth. Oh seek your Saviour, Ada, ere it is too late. You may perhaps have done so and are now at peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. But if you hold the doctrine of the Mormonites which is contrary to scripture this cannot be. See to it dear Ada before it be too late. It is a solemn thing to die.
I cannot give you much information about your old friends, I am not often in St. John's now. Wm. Kell (?) died last summer. I suppose you remember him. Thomas G. Morry is also dead and John Morry's wife. Robert Morry at Caplin Bay has lost five daughters in diphtheria. My husband has not been well for some time. He was in England last summer and spent many happy hours with Fanny and her family. They are all such nice young people all engaged in doing some work for their Saviour. There has been a great deal of sickness here this winter. The weather has been very changeable. I trust your children will be a great comfort to you as they grow up. At present I am sure they are.
With very kind love and praying that you may be taught by the Holy Spirit for Christ's sake, believe me to be, dear Ada,
Your affectionate cousin Eliza H. Hoyles
210616:
I need to do further research to determine when she died. I previously had thought she predeceased her mother who died in February 1879 but now realise that is not so as she has written a letter the following month (see above). She is also named as the executrix of her husband's will but that may be an oversight. While he died on February 22, 1888, his will was written a decade earlier (June 5, 1878) and it may be that he simply never got around to revising it before his death.

It does not say when the marriage actually took place. But since this date is before the date proposed by Freda I would think she got it wrong. Newspaper announcements appear after, not before the marriage.
It also states that Bride was the daughter of the late Pasco [sic] Carter of St. John's.

020314 from Jean Carter Stirling:
Hi, Chris. The Robert Carter that wrote the journals had a younger sister Eliza Howe Carter who married 1) Bulley then 2) Woolcombe; she lived in England and seems to have looked after her mother and her brother's daughter (I have a photo of myself standing by that house during a visit to England) - she is mentioned often in the Carter Journals as is his brother, James who was in business with him, but lived in England, and visited Ferryland often enough to have a house there. This James (Howe) Carter married Thomasina Dunsterville Pyne of Dartmouth, I have her full background as well, she died age 40 . and they had 3 children, Mary Oxnham Carter who married Arthur Kent Morry, 5 Nov. 1852 at St. John's (no issue); James who grew up to become Sheriff of Nfld. and Elizabeth Carter who married 1861 in London - Clarence O'Brien. The latter was young when her mother died, she went to live at that time with her aunt Eliza Woolcombe.

From Jean Carter Stirling's own family tree notes:
Elizabeth, also called Bessie in her uncle Robert Carter's Diary, would have been less than two years old when her mother died.

CENSUS of 1851,St.Leonard's Exeter, (Reel 35, page 450) Elizabeth H Carter, 17, Niece, is part of Elizabeth R. Woolcombe's household, her father's sister.
MARRIAGE:Nfld. Newspaper: Carter - Elizabeth, youngest daughter of Ja mes Howe Carter, Ferryland, married December 4, 1861, Clarence Lucine O'Brien , youngest son of the late Donatius O"Brien, County Clare; in London.
Her baptismal record as transcribed by the Dartmouth Family History Society in their 2007 booklet actually gives her middle name as well as her surname as Carter. Probably an error but I am leaving it in for now.

Either the above burial record does not pertain to this Elizabeth Jane Carter or else there was another given her name after her death. I suspect that this was another child because there is evidence that this girl lived to marry and moved to England.
