Information from Eileen Bunny best's FTM file based on research by John Paul Bradford:

GREGORY BATTCOCK, PRIEST OF THE DIOCESE OF HARBOUR GRACE

We do not have a great deal of information regarding Father Gregory T. Battcock. He was born about 1845 probably in Brigus South. He was the son of Thomas Battcock mentioned above as a member of the House of Assembly and his wife, Esther. In 1883, he became the first parish priest of the newly established parish of the Holy Cross in Holyrood in the Diocese of Harbour Grace. Prior to this time, Holyrood had been part of the mission of Harbour Grace. We do not know anything about his education and ordination. On May 20, 1883, he served as subdeacon at the ordination of Father T.E. Lynch at the cathedral. In 1891, he was transferred to St. Brendan's. McAlpine's 1898 Directory shows him there. Later he was given charge of a huge territory stretching from Gambo to Grandfalls. His name turns up the Colliers area in 1889 among some baptismal entries where he is noted as a visiting priest. He signs the register "J.G. Battcock" which may mean he went by his second name. In 1908, he was transferred back to Holyrood where he died on September 12, 1910 at the age of sixty-four. He is buried under the Church of the Holy Cross.

The following is his obituary from the Saint John's Daily News:

Sudden Death of Rev. Father Battcock

Last night a telegram from Holyrood reached the office, announcing the death of Rev. Fr. Battcock, the parish priest. It occurred suddenly at 8:30 p.m. yesterday. While out for a drive on the South Side with some friends, he was seized with a pain over the region of the heart. Returning home, he rallied from the attack, and took some tea. After tea, he left the Palace, went half way to the station, returned home and immediately fell into a death slumber. All that could be done was done by loving friends, who stood at the bedside of the dying priest. Our informant adds: "The suddeness of the death of Father Battcock has paralyzed the community with sorrow at the loss of their dearly beloved parish priest. The Rev. Father Battcock's relatives, friends and the sorrowing people of Holyrood, have heartfelt sympathy." The Rev. G.J. Battcock was a native of Ferryland District, and had been stationed at Holyrood for a short time. Previously he was at Gambo and St. Brenden's in Bonavista Bay. He was a man of exceptional culture and refinement, the kindliest of hosts, and among the most devoted of sons and teachers of the Church. It was our good fortune to have known and honoured him when labouring in the St. Brendan's parish, and we count it a privilege this morning to pay a tribute of respect to the memory of the good and scholarly priest; whose kindness we can never forget. His death in not only a severe blow to the Holyrood parish, but a distinct loss to the Roman Catholic Church and Newfoundland generally.
